Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
For centuries, humankind has been fascinated with the curious and unusual all over the world. Now, Ripleys presents "fun, facts and fish" about the underwater world. What might a young reader see in and around oceans? This book is an overview using photo illustrations, lively, colorful format, and humor. Just as glass cases in a Ripley's museum are arranged to catch the visitors' eyes, so the book uses many devices to attract the young reader. Insets labeled "Twists," (shown with an "R" in a circle), point out interesting facts. For instance, on the pages featuring whales the twist points out that blue whale poop is pink in color, is many feet long and as much as ten inches wide and gets its color from the blue whale's diet of krill. Big Word Alerts are featured as large red caution signs; these explain big words such as ecosystem or atmosphere. Sometimes "twist this" mean turn the book around for more information. In short, the book is a colorful hodgepodge of anything marine: deep sea creatures, marine mammals, waves, coral reefs, mangrove swamps, animals in armor, predator-prey interactions, attractively colored marine life, poisonous creatures, deep-sea explorers, how humans impact the ocean. And the book would not be from "Ripley's Believe it or Not" series if it did not include mysterious discoveries, biggest, best, worst, and unexplained. This the kind of book young readers can open at any page for a dose of information and wonder. Comparing this to more traditional nonfiction books is like comparing a Ripley's Believe it or Not collection to a Natural Science museum or aquarium: "you pays your money and you takes your choice." It includes an extensive index. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
