U2's second album was a transitional recording as their Christian beliefs came to the forefront and they began to expand their instrumental palette. The Edge really steps out on guitar and piano. The weak link was Bono's lyrics and vocals. The story is that his notebook was stolen and he rewrote the songs as they were recorded. The lyrics aren't bad; they just seem a bit sketchy. The standouts for me are he numbers that try to break the mold. Tomorrow with its pipes at the beginning, its pleading lyric (is Bono addressing his late mother or Jesus?), and its build into a rave-up is very good. I also like the somber, spare October and the celebratory With A Shout (Jerusalem). The first two could have fit unto The Unforgettable Fire. The bonus CD is excellent as a retrospective of early U2, featuring fine live versions of Boy and October songs and a few forgettable B sides.
