Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
A variety of exotic animals populate the pages of this bright and colorful book, from sea urchins to elephants, polar bears to pelicans, kookaburras to chimpanzees and more. Each double-page spread features a single animal illustrating a pair of simple "opposite" concepts. For example, the octopus of the book's title is used to illustrate "fat" and "thin," a crocodile takes on "wet" and "dry," and a chimpanzee demonstrates "bold" and "shy." In the last pair of opposites, a kookaburra shows "high" and "low." Towards the end, the book shifts gears. All of the animals ask, "Kookaburra where?" and the response is "I don't know!" But child readers will be overjoyed to know; they'll spot the sly bird flying off the edge of the page, for sure. The last couple of two-page spreads show the animals back in their native terrains. Blackstone's text is fun, and the assorted animals engage the imagination. But Bauer's illustrations are really what make this book. Her zany-looking splashy acrylic animals and wildly patterned borders will have young art lovers itching to pick up their own art supplies and start painting. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green
School Library Journal
PreS-K—This book explores one animal pair per spread and features simple rhymes ("Octopus fat, octopus thin. Sea urchin out, sea urchin in"). A few of the comparisons are clunky (snow leopard climb, snow leopard fall), but most do an effective job of showing the differences. The last two spreads answer the question, "…where do all these creatures go?" and provide a simple illustration of their habitats. The text is accompanied by vivid, appealing acrylic drawings surrounded by textured borders, with backgrounds painted in thick strokes. An attractive, useful concept book.—Beth Cuddy, Seward Elementary School, Auburn, NY
