In 1979, Michael Jackson embarked on the next phase of his solo career and entered the studio with veteran jazz and pop producer Quincy Jones. Containing four Top Ten singles, Off the Wall became the most successful project of Jackson's career to that point. The album scored Jackson a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, though it merely hinted at the superstardom that would follow with the release of his next solo project, Thriller. This reissue contains bonus material, including original demo recordings of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Workin' Day and Night." Plus, interviews with Jones and songwriter Rod Temperton.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Michael Jackson had recorded solo prior to the release of Off the Wall in 1979, but this was his breakthrough, the album that established him as an artist of astonishing talent and a bright star in his own right. This was a visionary album, a record that found a way to break disco wide open into a new world where the beat was undeniable, but not the primary focus -- it was part of a colorful tapestry of lush ballads and strings, smooth soul and pop, soft rock, and alluring funk. Its roots hearken back to the Jacksons' huge mid-'70s hit "Dancing Machine," but this is an enormously fresh record, one that remains vibrant and giddily exciting years after its release. This is certainly due to Jackson's emergence as a blindingly gifted vocalist, equally skilled with overwrought ballads as "She's Out of My Life" as driving dancefloor shakers as "Working Day and Night" and "Get on the Floor," where his asides are as gripping as his delivery on the verses. It's also due to the brilliant songwriting, an intoxicating blend of strong melodies, rhythmic hooks, and indelible construction. Most of all, its success is due to the sound constructed by Jackson and producer Quincy Jones, a dazzling array of disco beats, funk guitars, clean mainstream pop, and unashamed (and therefore affecting) schmaltz that is utterly thrilling in its utter joy. This is highly professional, highly crafted music, and its details are evident, but the overall effect is nothing but pure pleasure. Jackson and Jones expanded this approach on the blockbuster Thriller, often with equally stunning results, but they never bettered it.

This album was released twenty eight years ago. and when you play it today it does not sound dated. Every song on it is timeless and "Off The Wall" the title track just has that great groove you can listen to over and over again. The special edition of this cd gives you a taste of what a musical genius Michael is.

This is a really good album to add to anyones MJ collection. I usually don't like disco that much, but these songs have a really good dance beat!! But the reason that I gave it 4 stars is because on some tracks such as I Can't Help It,well, I think MJ could do better. But otherwise, it is AWESOME!!!

Incredible (of course)! Please change the image of the album to the correct album art. It may prevent people from purchasing this album because people may think the wrong item will arrive.

in my opinion, pop music started with this classic. michael put in a mixture of music, including pop, rock, and disco. in my opinion, this album set the standard for all the really successful black artists to follow after it.

This is the CD that turned the corner for Michael Jackson, solidifying him as a solo artist. The tracks are awesome. If you don't own "Off The Wall" what are you waiting for.

I had to buy this after hearing Off The Wall on the radio one day. Great song. There I was going down the interstate and I could not stop moving/"dancing" in my seat. Awesome song. There are other great songs. One of Michael's best albums.

I have always liked this record, but after the recent death of Michael I have a newfound appreciation of its greatness. It is, in fact, not only one of the greatest Disco albums of all time...it is one of the greatest recordings ever. With the help of Quincy Jones, Michael charted his own course for Mega Superstardom with this album. The amazing production values and Michael's young voice crowding maturity make this album unforgetable and groundbreaking.

When the U.S. Postal Service's ''Celebrate the Century Express'' train stopped in my hometown during September 2000, the songs coming from the outdoor speakers were those from this album, including ''Girlfriend'' and ''It's the Falling in Love''. This was fitting, because ''Off the Wall'' is one of the finest pop albums of the 20th century. Produced by Quincy Jones, who also produced George Benson's magnificent 1980 album ''Give Me the Night'', the album is enjoyable from start to finish, with 10 solid songs that deserved their popularity among radio listeners and rollerskaters. In his autobiography ''Moonwalk'', Jackson described Jones as ''the best producer I could have asked for'' and explained how the two felt it was important to ''capture passion and strong feelings in a recorded performance.'' They succeeded in their quest. Michael's singing is brilliant. Bassist Louis Johnson plays as well as Chic's bassist Bernard Edwards. The rhythm section varies the beats at various parts of a song so that they don't end up being monotonous. And the guitar players are great, too. The songs ''Rock With You'' and ''Off the Wall'' have solid grooves that can be listened to repeatedly with great enjoyment. The vocalists and musicians on this album are masters of the R&B, disco, and pop genres.
