Overview

OH NO! is a children's book, written and illustrated by Dorothy Cox, teacher, artist and grandmother.

Heart warming verses inspire young minds to confront scary dreams and find happy endings.

Have you had a dream that went on and on about trying to get ready to go to school, only to have things go so awry that you missed your school bus?

If so, you know how relieved Peter is, when he discovers in his dream that it is a Saturday in August and he can sleep in awhile longer.

The story is brought to life with Dorothy's artistic touch to dramatize little Peter's dream and shake up his morning routine getting ready to go to school.

Wild toothpaste, an empty cereal box, spiders, a cat, coat and hat are Dorothy's characters scripted into Peter's wake up call. Young children relate to this cast of actors, the same cast they confront on their morning jaunt from the bed to the bus.

This story read by Dorothy to her grandchildren can be shared by parents and grandparents everywhere to help young minds rest, when confronted with a topsy turvy world and a blurry line between a dream and a bus stop.

Dorothy's verse and artwork help young minds see that Peter's shout of "On No!" in distress is but a step along the path to a comforting "Oh Yes!"

About the Author

Dorothy Cox, author and illustrator

Finley, a small town in Washington State, is where Dorothy's childhood began and her artistic talents first budded. She drew horses and people in the second grade of a small school house near Kennewick.

Her artistic talents grew throughout her life. She would go one to illustrate a calendar for Green Giant, one of the region's largest employers.

Art and teaching are the two themes that define the woman who created the story of Peter and his OH NO! dream.

Dorothy attended college to study art and interior design. She received her AA degree at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, where was a graphic artist for the Associated Student Body.

Dorothy studied Childhood Education courses at Wenatchee Valley Community College in Washington and she taught preschool in Helena, Montana.

Story time with her young students was Dorothy's favorite time in the classroom. She had always loved books; as a teacher, she especially cherished those that inspired the young minds in her care.

As Dorothy watched children react to the stories she read to them, the story of Peter's dream popped into her mind. She jotted down the verses on the back of an envelope and waited for the right time to create the story's artwork.

The summer of 2010 was the right time. In her studio Dorothy channeled her artistic skills to create the colorful drama that becomes Peter's dreamscape.

This story which Dorothy has read to her grandchildren can be shared by parents and grandparents everywhere to help young minds rest, when confronted with a topsy turvy world and a blurry line between a dream and a bus stop.

Dorothy's verse and artwork help young minds see that Peter's shout of "On No!" in distress is but a step along the path to a comforting "Oh Yes!"

Dorothy lives on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.
