The Old Folks At Home: Warehouse Them or Leave Them on the Ice Floe by Barry Friedman

Henry and Harriet Callins, having discovered that all that glitters is not Golden Age, move into Restful Bowers, a community for seniors. It has all the amenities anyone would want, plus a Care Center and Assisted Living facility, their umbrella.

Henry attends meetings, where problems are solved by planning more meetings. For Henry’s fellow residents, the big event each day is waiting for the mailman. They enhance their wealth by scraping off the nickels and dimes that come in charity solicitation letters.
Harriet lives in a world of tea and cookies. Henry is obsessed by a suspicion that residents in the Assisted Living facility are getting an assist they don’t need or want. His curiosity puts his life and that of Harriet in mortal danger.

I really liked this book. It is an easy-to-read mystery with a little humor thrown in. I am 22 and although the main character is 79, I felt like I was there beside him. This book is very well written with few gramatical errors and few dull moments. A must read!

Very original story. Didn't want to put it down & didn't want it to end. One of the best I've read in a long time. JBH

As lighthearted as a mystery can be and still include death, dying, and elder care problems. Seriously. Enjoyable, effortless reading experience disguises real and potential societal problems with a cozy veneer. If you're a true mystery fan, try it, you'll like it.

I am finding this book to be just okay. Not boring enough for me to put it down, but certainly not that entertaining either. There doesn't seem to be much of a plot other than an elderly couple moves into an retirement complex and the husband is suspicious that something is not right in the Assisted Living and Care Center Wings. I am almost through with the book and I am just now at the point where I am mildly curious to see how it will end.  If you are looking for truly engrossing reading, this isn't it.

This was a good story. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending, because it went in a direction which I hadn't expected. There was great closure to the book as well. Some stories leave you wanting more and leave you wondering, but not this one! Highly recommend.

Funny and relatable but the ending is just way too far fetched and unbelievable. Disappointed overall.

Easy read, some good laughs and slightly predictable mystery, but worth the time to enjoy the story.

Being not so far from being put out to pasture myself, the theme hits home. However the ending was predictable and it could have been more suspenseful.

I got it to see if I would like it but when i started reading it I could not put it down.

It went from a cute story about aging adults to a mystery and then went a bit bizaar at the end. But all in all was enjoyable.

The humor caught my attention in the beginning, then became more curious with story of what was going on. As the headline states, I was disappointed with how this ended. I just expected more.

Starts a little slow. But has a lot of truth about "Virtual Living Centers". As a 70s something male, I enjoyed the grit of the main character.
