Old Mother Hubbard by Jane Cabrera, Sarah Catherine Martin

An adorable new board book edition of the classic rhyme in Jane Cabrera's signature brightly textured style.

When Old Mother Hubbard finds her cupboard bare, she goes on a wacky shopping spree to buy her hungry dog some shoes, a wig, a coat-everything but his supper. And while she's out, the dog has his own fun, from washing the cat to dancing a jig. By the time the dog gets his bone, children will be in stitches from the silly antics of this lovable dog.

There are probably few things that truly stand the test of time and nursery rhymes are among this select group. My mother and grandmother recited the same rhymes to me and I said them to my children. Surely one of the most popular of these amusing ditties is Old Mother Hubbard. However, neither my grandmother or mother had seen Jane Cabrera's version - they would have loved it! Talented author/artist Cabrera has given this rhyme several smile provoking new twists, such as Mother Hubbard going to the tailor to buy her dog a coat and going to the barber's to buy him a wig. More surprises come when she returns home after each trip and sees what dog has been doing. All of this comes in a 5' by 6' board book, sturdy enough to withstand many page turnings by small fingers. Illustrations are eye popping bright and cheerful. - Gail Cooke

This book is a retelling of the Mother Goose rhyme of the same name. Jane Cabrera, author and illustrator updates the illustrations. They are in a painterly style. She has double-loaded her brush first in one color, then tipped it into another color. The result is wonderful movement of not only figures, but solid masses of background. It is possible to see many colors in each of the figures. Typeface perfectly matches the painting style. It is whimsical and hand created, not a typeface. On most of the pages, text appears on the left side of the page and the illustration on the right side. Some of the text appears on top of the background on double page spreads. It is a great addition to anyone's nursery rhyme collection.
