Omics Technologies in Cancer Biomarker Discovery
The early detection of human cancer is still one of the great challenges in the battle against this disease. Single biomarkers are not likely to provide sufficient diagnostic power and multibiomarker assays should be developed in order to reach high diagnostic accuracy for cancer screening at the population level. Omics technologies are emerging new biomarker discovery tools and have a high potential to yield panels of novel and cancer-specific biomarkers. This book provides an overview of recent studies aimed at the discovery of new cancer biomarkers through omics-based approaches, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabonomics, peptidomics, phosphoproteomics, immunomics, glycoproteomics, lipidomics, bioinformatics and integrative omics technologies. The book serves as an introduction to researchers in the field and provides the platforms to facilitate the development of new approaches in cancer research.

About the Author

Xuewu Zhang received his BSc in Mathematics in 1983 at Hunan Normal University, China. He got his MSc degree in Ecology in 1990 and PhD degree in Entomology in 1993, both from Zhongshan University, China. Then he worked at the Food Engineering Research Center of State Education Ministry, Zhongshan University, China. After May of 1998, he was invited to do postdoctoral research at several universities, including The University of Hong Kong, University of British Columbia (Canada), University of Manitoba (Canada) and University of California at Los Angeles (USA). In January of 2003, under the scheme “Admission of Talents, he returned to The University of Hong Kong as a Research Assistant Professor. In August o f2005, he joined the South China University of Technology as a Professor. Currently his main research interest focuses on target identification of biopharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals with omics technologies.
