Uplifting allegory about a young Sabra, whose homeland, in its youth, like her, is struggling for self determination. By  Deborah Lurya  on December 19, 2013 There is only one word in my mind to describe Israeli’s newest and most promising author, Bat-Zion Susskind-Sacks, " On a Wing from the Holy Land”— inspirational! “On a Wings from the Holy Land” is a historical fictional novel, marking the coming of age of one incredible woman, and that of her beloved homeland, Eretz Israel. Jessica Kozlow, the protagonist, starts out as a young sheltered woman, a beautiful and gifted daughter of Holocaust survivors, Sam and Dina Kozlow. Their story’s beginnings set the the stage for a long sojourn and quest for self determination and truth. Jessica is essentially a larger than life character because she is a virtual allegory for all of Israel. This novel is the story of a young courageous lady, and and a young new country, Israel. I would even go as far as to call it a love story. On A Wing from the Holy Land covers a lot of ground for a first novel. It’s action packed and fast paced, taking the reader on a whirlwind, world class adventure that spans not only the entire globe, but it is also a soul searching, spiritual journey. Included in the vivid vignettes ,or as the author puts it, "fragments of life”, are Jessica’s personal experiences of courage and longing for adventure, as she ventures out on her own, to un mask unknown parts of her heart and mind, and the physical world at large. She is seeking to know everything life has to offer, including love, pain, loss, disappointment, introspection, and finally forgiveness and redemption, But it is also the story of family and friends, of countrymen, and their experiences as survivors of the worst of all crimes of humanity- the Shoah. Hence we learn of the ghettos, the internment camps, ravages of war— degradation, starvation, death, terrible losses, of family members and friends. Emotionally charged at times, the historical events are touched upon with grace and the author’s wit and skillful and sensitive portrayals and recanting of intimate and safeguarded family accounts. Jessica’ own personal experiences of lost innocence, love interests, heartaches, remorse, betrayal, human error and redemption are all part of the incredible excursion on which she takes us. Ms. Susskind-Sacks has managed to artfully put together a beautifully crafted mosaic-- a series of independent vignettes that, when pieced together , are delightfully entertaining and awe inspiring. And it all comes together perfectly, as a masterful piece, which portrays the life of one very determined woman and one very determined people. A deep longing for her own roots and an enormous respect and love for her people, is what brings Jessica back home, and yes, on the wings of angels.. What I loved about Jessica is her relentless fighting spirit and her fearlessness and pride as a Jewess. But mostly what I admired her for was her utter refusal to permit anyone to besmirch her people or her native homeland. She was, when in her defense of her people most endearing to me. . Her strong sense of loyalty and duty, combined with her deep respect and admiration for her people, are admirable. This reader highly recommends this book and hopes that the author will be inspired to write another one soon.

Batzi has written a story that comes from the nightmare inflicted upon the Jewish people in Nazi Germany which will make you both smile and cry.

Bat Zion Susskind-Sacks takes the reader through a colorfully woven fabric of experiences looking through the eyes of and feeling the heart of every Jewish woman through the character of Jessica.  The author masterfully intertwines Israeli History past, and present while unfolding the life of a character who is a life teacher, an educator, a wife, mother and lover.  Bat Zion Susskind-Sacks has artistically painted a portrait  of the character of Jessica with an inspiring chain of events that unfold throughout Jessica's various life steps sharing her dreams and achievments, her loves and her passion to defeat the odds.  I was taken on a path toward my own self-discovery through the pages of this book.  Readers around the world will be enfolded in a series of life events, living them all through the character and experience the world changing history of the great nation that is Israel.  The author can expect to become a beloved author not only in Israel and the United States but of the entire world.  Looking forward  to seeing many future works of art such as this .   Truly Inspiring and a complete masterpiece!           t
