"On Being a Muslim" is a collection of thought-provoking reflections on the reality of being a Muslim in a world where right and wrong, truth and untruth are not easily discerned. Esack tackles issues such as gender inequality, weakness of faith, and social injustice with surprising honesty and humor. The book is personal and anecdotal, and can be read from beginning to end, or one can simply open up to any chapter and start reading. I recommend this book to anyone who has found the reality of being a Muslim difficult to reconcile with their belief that Islam is a spiritually uplifting and socially just religion.
