Lots of local Salem,MA references for the natives.
On Gallows Hill follows three high school girls from Salem, MA grouped together for a school project. One of the girls, Cassandra Wallace, is kidnapped and, as the story progresses, we learn about her friend Katelyn's psychic ability and how it helped in the search for Cassie. The story takes place around Halloween and Lynda does a great job of describing the people, places and events that happen during that time of year. If you've ever been to Salem you'll recognize many of the scenes in the book. This is a teen paranormal mystery thriller, but adults would also enjoy the story. I found that I had a hard time putting the book down not knowing what was going to happen next. Since the story takes place in Salem the witch trials are a main part of the story. Lynda goes into great detail about the trials and the executions of the accused. I'm sure you'll learn some details you didn't know before. She really shined the spotlight of history on what a travesty the trials were.
I was admittedly hesitant about reading a young adult novel, but was pleasantly surprised at how riveting this book was. I love a story that offers different points of view and On Gallows Hill certainly delivers! I expected the book to have an over-abundance of the paranormal, but I found the balance was just right. The way the author described the main character's feelings and abilities made me feel a lot of compassion for Katelyn. As eager as I was to turn each page, at the same time I didn't want the story to end. Very well written, will keep the reader interested all the way through and certainly wanting for more. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next!
