Kate Willoughby scores with On the Brink, an In the Zone prequel. First round NHL draft pick and Holtzer University junior Hart Griffin is determined to make his dream of playing professional hockey come true. After an unexpected night with fan Jeremy Fenton, he begins to question his sexuality. This contemporary sports romance is appropriate for new adults. The story takes place in Michigan. I loved Hart and Jeremy’s story! At 95-pages, I flew through the book in one sitting. I love that Jeremy is an art major. He is creative, courageous, and fun. Hart is a wonderful team captain who is intelligent. I enjoyed the plot. I felt bad for what Jeremy went through and love how he handles the situation. I also appreciated how Hart acted. He did a lot of soul searching in this story. I love that Hart gives Jeremy self-defense lessons. I also thought it was great that they started out the school’s diversity campaign. I thought Hart’s method of getting the team to stop their inappropriate slurs on the ice was clever. Kate Willoughby has an excellent writing style. Her hockey scenes are descriptive and easy to visualize. Her scenarios are believable and heartfelt. Both characters are well-developed and grew throughout the story. On the Brink is an excellent addition to the In the Zone Series. Complimentary copy provided in exchange for an honest review.

A hot hockey star doesn’t know what hit him! This is the first book I’ve read by Kate Willoughby and now I want to read more! This story is actually a prequel for her In the Zone series but I haven’t read any of those yet. This book was written and published after the other books in the series because fans wanted to know the story of how Hart Griffin and Jeremy Fenton got together. Jeremy loves watching Hart play hockey. He’s been crushing on Hart forever but never expects anything to come of it; he knows that Hart is straight. Hart rescues Jeremy after a hockey game when he is stranded without transportation Jeremy finds it hard to hide his attraction. Hart Griffin is the captain of his college hockey team and he’s straight (at least that’s what he keeps telling himself). When he rescues Jeremy he certainly doesn’t expect what happens next. This is a sweet (but very steamy) story about two college guys who kind of start of fast and then become friends. Hart keeps denying himself until he finally has to face his fears. I felt the deep attraction between the two guys and the struggle they both go through was both heart-wrenching and touching. The story ends with an HFN. I suspect that if I’d already read the other books in this series I would know that it’s more than an HFN but that really didn’t matter at all; I still enjoyed this story so much and now I want to read the other books in the series. The author’s suggested reading order for this series is: Book 1 - On the Surface (Tim and Erin) Book 2 - Across the Line (Calder and Becca) Prequel - On the Brink (Hart and Jeremy, Part 1) Book 3 - Out of the Game (Alex and Claire) Book 4 - Under the Spotlight (Joe and Christine) ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my review. Review will be posted to Xtreme-Delusions dot com on or after release date.

Hart Griffin is a stud on the hockey team and his only goal is to play professional hockey. His whole life has been laid out to follow this path and it seems nothing will threaten it until he helps out a fan who needed rescuing. When Hart encounters Jeremy Fenton after his jeep has been vandalized, he offers the super fan a ride home. As the two talk, thoughts that Hart has had for years begin to surface and an experimental kiss leads to a very hot encounter in his car. Will these two take a chance at a real relationship, or will Hart continue to deny what deep down he knows is true all because he doesn't want to jeopardize the dream he's wanted for so long? I am so glad that Kate Willoughby has given us the story of how Hart and Jeremy first came together! This is a story with interesting and engaging characters, about finding what is right for yourself and sticking up for yourself when others won't. The chemistry between Hart and Jeremy is undeniable and sparks flew from the word go. Definitely worth picking up if you've read the rest of the In The Zone series and if you haven't read it yet, this is a great place to start!!
