Overview

VIDEO ONE: Caesarea Philippi - Everything to Lose, Nothing to Gain. In the midst of pagan self-indulgence, Jesus challenged his disciples to deny themselves and follow him. Christians today must also have the courage to boldly live out Christ's message in a pagan society. Sardis - The Salt of the Earth. The apostle John used the example of Sardis, a city that overlooked its weak points and thereby enabled invading armies to conquer it, to warn Christians to be alert to their weakness so that they would not compromise their faith. Pergamum - Where Satan Lives. At this regional seat of Rome, the governor had 'the power of the sword' to determine life and death. John reminded Christians of this powerful, pagan city that Jesus alone-not the Roman governor-hold all power, including power of life and death. VIDEO TWO: Ephesus - The Mark of the Beast. In this wealthy, beautiful center of idolatry, Paul unashamedly proclaimed the truth of the Gospel. Like Paul and other Christians in Ephesus, we are to love one another and courageously live out the truth of Christ in a culture that is openly hostile toward him. Laodicea - Hot or Cold. Laodiceans had a unique understanding of why lukewarm water was worthless. Today, we are to be like a hot bath or a cold drink to a world in need of cleansing and refreshment. 5 sessions; 2 videos, 130 minutes.

SESSION ONE

Everything to Lose, Nothing to Gain

Introduction

4 minutes

Welcome

Assemble the participants together. Welcome them to session one of Faith Lessons on the Early Church.

What's to Come

In this session, we'll learn about how Jesus, the rabbi, prepared His chosen disciples for their future ministry in the unbelievably pagan cities of Asia Minor, which today we know as Turkey. We'll visit the ruins of the synagogue of Korazin in Galilee, the region in which Jesus did most of His teaching. Next, we'll visit Caesarea Philippi, a city famous for its pagan worship. Here, Jesus taught His disciples-and some startled pagan worshipers-key lessons concerning His identity as the living Messiah and the church's power to triumph over evil. Finally, we will visit the Mount of Olives, where Jesus concluded His disciples' teaching by ascending into heaven while they watched. We will see how these events empowered Jesus' disciples to go out and change their world.

Questions to Think About

Participant's Guide page 13.

Ask each question and solicit a few responsesfrom group members. You may want to write these responses on a marker board, chalkboard, or overhead projector so that participants may view them as the session progresses.

1. Take a minute to list what you find to be the most difficult places or situations in which to minister in the world around you. Suggested Responses: These will vary. Encourage participants to think of a variety of specific places and situations.

2. What factors make it difficult to share your faith in these places or situations?

Suggested Responses: These will vary, and they will overlap. Your list may be similar to the obstacles Jesus' disciples faced when they went into Asia Minor.

Let's keep these ideas in mind as we view the video.
