Christian Volmar is clearly a railway expert, and this book is important reading for anyone interested in railway public policy (whether in the UK or elsewhere). Unfortunately the author, in lambasting ideologues in government for privatizing the UK's rail industry, comes across as an ideologue himself. He blames privatization for basically everything that has gone wrong with the UK's railways and gives just passing consideration to bad things that happened while the railways were publicly-owned. The conclusion, in which he calls railway privatization a "crime" and refers to government officials who privatized them as "bas*ards" comes across as unhinged. To get the full picture, I would recommend reading both this book and others.
