Overview

On War by Carl von Clausewitz

Carl von Clausewitz's On War has been called, "not simply the greatest, but the only truly great book on war." It is an extraordinary attempt to construct an all-embracing theory of how war works. Its coherence and ambition are unmatched by other military literature. On War is full of sharp observation, biting irony, and memorable phrases, the most famous being, "war is a continuation of politics by other means.

About the Author
Except for a brief stint in 1812 when he served in the Russian army, Clausewitz spent his whole career, from the age of twelve until his death in 1831, in the Prussian army. He fought in all the major Prussian campaigns against France, and his most fateful experience - the 1806 Battle of Jena-Auerstedt, in which Napoleon destroyed the Prussian army - inspired him to write On War.

Don't bother getting this abridged (also read butchered) version of Clausewitz' classic philosopy of war. If you want to know what Clausewitz was thinking, get a full translation. The editor may be right in calling some of the chapters outdated, for example the chapters on rivers or mountain warfare, but in every chapter he gives some useful tidbit of knowledge which applies in all times. The editor also inserted a lengthy introduction basically saying that Clausewitz' philosophy is bad when applied to modern times, showing his complete ignorance of what Clausewitz meant. Save your money for a full translation like The Everyman's Library edition by Peter Paret.

This is a very poor copy. The written characters are all jumbled up.

This is a Google digitized version of On War. Where the computer couldn't recognize text or symbols from the printed original, the digitized text becomes bogged down with misspellings and garbled text. Not worth the trouble of downloading for free. I deleted it immediately. I'd give it zero stars if I could.

This is not an easy book to read nor understand. It takes several readings. A large investment in time will allow the reader to understand Clausewitz's system and the remarkable way that it stills aides in understanding the phenomenon of war. The text is adorned with many historical examples. Continuously emphasizing that war is 'a continuity of policy by other means. He has defined perfectly the theory of war, its tactical and strategic purposes. A must for an military or political leader.
