Overview

All of England thinks Phillip Camden a monster—a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But as nurse Arabelle Denler watches the so-dubbed "Black Heart" every day, she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their paths twist together and he declares himself her new protector, she realizes she has her own role to play in his healing.

Phillip Camden would have preferred to die that day with his squadron rather than be recruited to the Admiralty's codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved. What comes as a shock is the reborn desire to truly live that Arabelle inspires in him.

But when an old acquaintance shows up and seems set on using him in a plot that has the codebreakers of Room 40 in a frenzy, new affections are put to the test.

"You'll either be a villain or a hero, Phil. Try to pick the right one, will you?" On Wings of Devotion is an incredible story of compassion and redemption! White has significantly raised the bar in Christian fiction with this one. Even with a tad slow start, it didn’t take long for Phillip and Arabelle to take purchase in my heart. Both so different and yet so in need of the other; their love story is one that I will long remember. This book has a strong Christian theme expertly woven throughout. Phillip’s agony over “The Incident” is palpable and blots out any color in his life…until Arabelle. Arabelle Denler has an incredibly strong faith in the Lord and her compassionate nature is prominent as a nurse. She’s seen the atrocities and toll war takes on soldier’s so it’s only natural she recognize the deep hurt in “Black Heart” Phillip Camden. I’ve always known White has a special gift when it comes to writing conversion scenes but the way she built up the emotional tension and turmoil leading to Camden’s conversion is exceptional. And may have caused a tear or two. I was delighted to see Barclay Pearce and “the girls” (from White’s Shadows Over England series) make brief appearances. It definitely deepened my pleasure in the story. I hope they show up in the next book too. Roseanna White fans are going to love this newest offering! It’s brimming with danger, intrigue, and romance. If you haven’t read her books, I highly recommend them. I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. All opinions are my own. No compensation has been received.

Roseanna M. White has touched the mind and the heart with her book, "On Wings of Devotion." From the man that no one wants to be, Phillip Camden, to the woman (Arabelle Danler) who just wants love and a purpose, Roseanna M. White creates a magnificent array of characters that keep the story flowing. A pilot's fall from grace and a nurse's consistent unwavering faith help the reader to become invested deeply into the outcome. Is redemption really possible for everyone, even those known for a "Black Heart?" Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley and was not required to write a favorable review. All opinions are my own.

“He’d remember that scene for the rest of his life, he was sure. Looking up and seeing her standing there, his wings flashing on her dress. Declaring her devotion better than words could ever do.” Wings of Devotion is the second book in the Codebreakers series. I struggled with reading the first book in the series, The Number of Love, and honestly could not finish it. Since Ms. White is a new author to me, I gave the second book a chance, and I had a hard time putting it down! It is an absolute page-turner and works extremely well as a stand-alone read. Wings of Devotion, set in London in 1918 during World War 1, is the well-crafted story of Arabelle Denler, an heiress and devoted nurse with a “brightness to her spirit”, and Phillip Camden dubbed “Black Heart”, a grounded Royal Flying Corps pilot now working as a cryptographer for British Intelligence. Deemed a villain by the press for his alleged responsibility for the death of all the other pilots in his squadron during a mission, Phillip is living a life full of guilt, anger, and bitterness. Arabelle deals with feelings of abandonment and inadequacy lamenting “I am just not enough.” Their initial tie is through an incident between Phillip’s sister, Cass, and Arabelle’s fiancé, Edmund Braxton; and the sweet love story progresses at a steady pace from there eclipsed at times by danger, espionage, threats, scandal, misunderstandings, and betrayal. Bits of humor and fun banter sprinkled throughout enhance the story. Ms. White does an outstanding job of blending real-life historical events into the fictional narrative, and the characters primary and secondary are well developed and memorable. I especially liked how the faith element permeates the story. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the third book in the series, A Portrait of Loyalty due to release in September. I received a copy of this book from the publisher via netgalley but am under no obligation to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Roseanna is by far one of my favorite historical romance writers. I have to read every book to puts out. I always get worried I will be disappointed but I never have been. Arabelle is a wonderful character, she is kind and puts others ahead of herself, even when something heartbreaking happens to her. Her reaction is beyond what most people would do. Phillip really is a good guy but something happened to make others think he did a very horrible thing. Ultimately, he is a protector. Then we are inside another character’s head that we soon find out relates to Phillip. At first I wasn’t sure what this part of the story had to do with the rest, but we don’t have to wonder too long. Roseanna White fans will be thrilled with this newest release. A copy of this book was given to me through Netgalley.com. All opinions are my own.

What a book! Roseanna M. White has done it once more with another amazing story. From the very beginning you are sucked in, unable to break away. Arabelle and Camden... where do I even begin? Roseanna writes in such a way you can't help but fall in love with her characters. The depth to all of them. I wanted to be best friends with Arabelle, she is such an amazing person and so inspiring. I found myself reflecting on my own life while reading their story. I want to be just as forgiving, just as good as Arabelle. And getting to know more about Camden was a wonderful journey. The Faith content Roseanna puts in her books is fantastic. And the humor! I just loved all of Arabelle's and Camden's witty comments. So many good quotes from this story! Getting to know more about the people who worked in Room 40 was great. I love all the history Roseanna puts in her books. Though it wasn't as strong in this story as in her others, it was there. The details she adds makes it feel like you are really there. The mystery element was intriguing and kept you guessing as to what was going to happen next? What were they planning? As you can tell I loved this faith filled story, showing forgiveness and second chances. It inspired you to have a deeper prayer life with God. To draw from His strength and not count on your own. I could not put this book down. It is 381 pages long and I read all but the last 80 pages in one day. In one sitting. It was just so good. I received this book for my honest review.

On Wings of Devotion is an exciting book full of amazing characters and intrigue in a World War I London setting. Arabelle Denler is a nurse who is not afraid to take charge and help those who need aid. But she is also an independently wealthy philanthropist who uses her fortune to help those in need. She is deeply spiritual, and uses her resources and abilities to comfort others in a way that draws them into God's presence. She is a lovely character. Phillip Camden has been dubbed, "Black Heart," as the captain of a squadron of pilots on a mission that went very wrong. Underneath his gruff, selfish facade, he is hurting and guilt-ridden, yet fiercely loyal. Much of the story is woven around Ara and Cam getting to know each other and exploring their relationship, while the intrigue is ramped up throughout the story, until it comes to a very exciting conclusion. Book Two of The Codebreakers series, this book picks up where The Number of Love leaves off, yet it entirely stands on its own. It was a lovely surprise to be reunited with characters from White's previous novels. I recommend this book for readers of historical romance, those with an interest in World War I, and readers of White's books. This is one not to be missed! I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Bethany House, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

On Wings of Devotion Soars! Roseanna M. White has the ability to weave mystery, love, historical details and spiritual challenge into all of her books and On Wings of Devotion is no exception. Taking place toward the end of World War One, the story focuses on Arabelle Denler and Phillip Camden as they seek to look past the exterior to see each other as God does. After a difficult and painful childhood, Ara has learned how to perceive people’s hurts, even when they are hurting her. She’s not perfect, which might be why her perchance for listening to how God can use her to help others is inspiring. Phillip is loyal and even though he is struggling with past mistakes and circumstances from his time fighting in the war as a pilot, he will go to any lengths to help those he cares about. With witty dialogue and World War One drama, you’ll be drawn into Arabelle and Phillip’s story. They challenge each other and must learn to love themselves before they can learn to love each other. A bonus in this book is that some of my favorite characters from the Shadows Over England series make an appearance! If you love well-written historical fiction, you can’t go wrong with anything by Roseanna M. White.

Another wonderful story by Roseanna M. White. On Wings of Devotion is the second book in The Codebreakers series and definitely worth reading if you love inspirational historical romance. Major Phillip Camden and Arabelle Denler find themselves thrown together unexpectedly while having to deal with family circumstances that have a major plot twist. It isn't all bad because Arabelle feels she is being led to play a part in his healing and maybe in doing so she can find healing herself. I'm looking forward to reading more books in this great series in the future! I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Roseanna White does it again!!!! This is book 2 in the Codebreakers series. I wholeheartedly recommend the first book (The Number of Love) and getting to know Margot DeWilde, but it not absolutely necessary to understand this book. This book takes place in England in the 1900's. There is a war going on and this series focuses on those that are doing what they can to help good win! The book mainly focuses on Arabelle and Phillip. We get to know both of them and their families throughout. Arabelle is a generous person, but she is not perfect and has her own struggles. Phillip begins with such an attitude you just know it's a shield. Throughout the book we see the struggles they both face personally and how it affects them as a couple. There is also a great amount of suspense and surprises. I don't want to ruin anything, but one of my favorite parts is the character visits. But it's not just a suspense romance, it's a story of wrong choices and bad behavior, but most importantly...it's a story of life. Initially, I had my doubts for "On Wings of Devotion." The book's hero is Major Philip "Black Heart" Camden, who was aloof and unlikable, at best, in the first installment of The Codebreakers series. The slated heroine, Arabelle Denler, was a dependable wartime nurse in the first book, but hadn't played an overly exciting role in "The Number of Love." This second book would be an enjoyable read, but I was not expecting fireworks as the reader. I was wrong! This story has villains, heroes, and historical events all tied into a gripping, comical, and overall wonderful read. I shuddered when I saw evil being planned and even smiled when seeing an old friend (past character) show up on the page. Each section is so well written that I understood characters' influences and reasoning, whether they were right or wrong. It's a FANTASTIC book! I've said this before, but Roseanna M. White is unbelievably talented and every book she writes gets better! (How is this possible?!) Her characters are both believable and interesting! As a bonus, White explains the truths and modifications of the events and characters for this book. When you're ready to flinch and cheer through an amazing book, pick up "On Wings of Devotion"! I received a complimentary copy of "On Wings of Devotion" from the publisher. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

First, I loved Arabelle and Phillip! Ara's independent strength and caring heart mix very well with Camden's complexities. I love the way Roseanna M. White writes history. It feels like a real-life story and I'm right there with the characters. The intrigue, the romance, the danger...all of it was so good!

Once again, Roseanna knocked it out of the park! I love how her books are always filled with mystery, intrigue, and romance – and “On Wings of Devotion” was no exception. From the very beginning, it seemed that Arabelle had her life all together and though she might not have been completely happy, she was satisfied. But even through the tragedies and the difficult times that life threw her way, Arabelle remains a light and continues to rely on God for her strength. I loved that brief glimpse we got when Arabelle seemed to be at her wits end and then Phillip said – “Don’t vanish on me, darling…That’s not what you do. Not you. You pray or sing one of those hymns or say something about God being there when no one else is. Isn’t that right?” What a testimony of Arabelle’s influence and love on Phillip’s life. And then there’s the dark, brooding, and oh so handsome hero – Phillip Camden. I loved having this deeper look into his life. Phillip carried so much burden from past mistakes and for so often would shrug of God’s love. Having Arabelle come into his life brought him meaning and joy again and it was beautiful watching his whole demeanor change and grow. And one of my favorite aspects of her books is how she manages to seamlessly weave in characters from her previous series! Make me want to go back and re-read all of her books I received a free copy from the author. No review, positive or otherwise, was required — all opinions are my own.

Ms. White hits another story out of the park with this tale of forgiveness, mercy, and joy during the darkest of days. “Oh, Phillip. You have the weight of the world on your shoulders and I just want to wrap you in a hug.” This is what I thought when I first met Phillip Camden in The Number of Love. I haven’t stopped loving him since. On the surface, Phillip appears to be your typical cocky broody pretty boy, but it hides a heart that feels deeply. Through the course of the story Roseanna takes him on a journey of learning the importance of not only asking for God’s forgiveness but forgiving himself. Then Phillip meets Arabelle Denler. Arabelle is sunshine itself. I admire the way she is practical and realistic but also is so full of grace and joy. And I mean JOY; the kind that only comes from resting in the confidence of your Heavenly Father. I was humbled by her reactions to situations again and again; they challenged me to ask “would I react so compassionately in that situation?” I was on pins and needles until the very end wondering if the story would turn out with the happy ending my heart craved. Until the last second I was wondering how it was going to work out. But, Roseanna wrote a beautiful ending at just the right speed to satisfy your “awww” factor while bringing true healing to her characters, even if not in the way you expect. I encourage you to pick up a copy now! While you can read this story as a stand alone, I’d encourage you to read The Number of Love first as it’ll give you a deeper connection to some of the characters. We also get to revisit character from her last two series: Shadows Over England and Ladies of the Manor. I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are honestly my own.

Dang. This series and these characters just keep getting better! I loved Arabelle and could relate so much to her. And Phillip is her perfect match. I can't say I adored Phillip, as he isn't usually the kind of guy I like, but his character was nonetheless fabulous and I loved him, even if I didn't love him, ya know? ;) White's writing style is as beautiful as ever. I instantly feel like I'm living in the time period with the authentic and historically accurate dialogue and descriptions. The history lessons White includes are so fascinating as well, and never dry or boring or interrupting the story. Speaking of story, from page one I was draw into the story and couldn't put it down! Even the slower moments kept my interest and the fast-paced suspenseful moments had my heart racing. All in all, I greatly enjoyed book two in The Codebreakers series, and can't wait to get my hands on book #3! I cannot recommend this enough if you are a lover of rich and fascinating historical fiction with a side of romance, espionage, and suspense. You definitely want to check this one out! FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

I was blessed with the privilege of reading Roseanna M. White’s newest release, On Wings of Devotion. The second of three books in The Codebreakers series, this one leaves you needing to read page after page because you just MUST know what comes next! The story centers around nurse Arabelle Denler, a smart, capable young woman that radiates kindness, and Major Phillip Camden, a pilot-turned-codebreaker with a questionable reputation. After their paths cross in a most interesting way, they find themselves drawn to each other in a story of romance, adventure, trust and forgiveness. I have loved every book of the author’s that I’ve read as they never disappoint, but I must admit that this one is absolutely fabulous. Roseanna M. White’s character development is beyond outstanding. I wish to be friends with Arabelle and Phillip, hold my breath when they are in danger, and cheer when they succeed. The author’s well-researched aspects of WWI England lend a special authenticity to the story, making the reader feel as if they’ve travelled back in time. Plot twists and delightful romance make the book breathtaking and satisfying. I could not stop turning pages, needing to know what happened next, but in turn, not wanting the story to end. Definitely recommending this book, and series, to everyone! I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher and was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions expressed are of my own.

Just when I think I have a favorite character and story by Roseanna White, she goes and writes another book, and suddenly, there’s a whole new contender for the title. “On Wings of Devotion” comes out swinging and draws you in from the start with the introduction (or rather re-introduction, if you’ve read the first book in the Codebreakers series, “The Number of Love”) of two characters you will instantly root for and love. Major Philip Camden has a swagger and charm that a girl (or all the girls!) can’t help but swoon over, but the past that’s given him the “Black Heart” reputation has left him broken and hurting, leaving him as a man who “wears his pain like a uniform.” Thankfully, there’s a nurse on hand. Arabelle Denler flat out steals the show, offering comfort and compassion to those around her even when it costs her the most. She could almost seem too perfect in her kindness if we didn’t get to see her insecurities and her own deep need to be loved. Then there’s my favorite aspect of her character – that she is plain (and not just in her own opinion). Featuring a heroine who is not a knockout beauty allowed White to let this character’s inner qualities shine brighter, and definitely made her, her struggles, and her triumphs even more relatable. Their story moves well, with intrigues, uncertainties, faith, and romance (SUCH a good romance!), all playing out against the backdrop of well-researched WWI events. Throughout Camden and Arabelle’s tale, as with every story White pens, there are the beautifully incorporated spiritual themes of God’s grace, forgiveness, His power, and His active presence. One thing that makes each of White’s books unique, though, is how each one feels like its own testimony, each one uncovering different aspects and depths to God’s redemptive love for us, and “On Wings of Devotion” does this so well that it will minister healing to everyone who reads it. *I received a complimentary copy of “On Wings of Devotion” from the publishers. As the second book in the Codebreakers series, On Wings of Devotion, by Roseanna M. White, is a thrilling work of historical fiction! Descriptive, intriguing, and thoroughly engaging, this novel is a genuine pleasure to read and to savor. Elements of history, romance, and mystery combine seamlessly to fashion a story that is interesting, thoughtful, and remarkably enjoyable. From the historic setting, to the unique characters, to the surprising plot, Ms. White delivers a story that is utterly satisfying! Set in England during WWI, the story captivates as it unfolds along the streets and in the buildings of early twentieth century London. Living under the shadow of blackout curtains, food rationing, and fear of air raids, the characters attempt to carry on with their lives and do their part for the war effort. And in so doing, they must face their fears, address their insecurities, pursue redemption, renew their hope, and nurture their faith all while their dreams are threatened by a dangerous enemy who is closer than they realize. On Wings of Devotion is truly a special book! Very well-researched and exceptionally well-written, it is a novel that inspires even as it entertains. As compelling as it is memorable, it is definitely a novel I can recommend wholeheartedly. *I was given a copy of this book by the publisher. A review was not required. The review I have written is voluntary and contains opinions that are entirely my own.

On Wings of Devotion is set during WW1, not a common time for many historical fiction books (something to love!), and focuses on the English codebreakers who were helping the war effort, although not in the air or in face-to-face combat. This second book in the series features a former pilot, Phillip Camden, grounded because he is under suspicion of causing the death of his squadron. He is recruited to work with the codebreaking division, and then crosses paths with Arabella Denler, a nurse at a nearby hospital. Her heart is to show him that despite his past mistakes, he is worthy of healing on every level - and love. While I know that these characters are fictional, White does such an incredible job portraying her characters and settings that the reader feels as though the story IS real. Her thoroughness in diving into the historical aspects and creating a plot/storyline that pulls the reader in is always wonderful. When reading, I prefer books that help me learn more about a specific time period (and cause me to do more digging myself), but also leave me with a love for the characters. Roseanna White does this so easily, and I am always ready for the next installment in her series. Her characters possess a depth (she definitely isn't a superficial writer) and face obstacles that are real-to-life, showing their various weaknesses, strengths, and growth. They are far from perfect, but there is such a sincerity to their characters, readers will quickly love them. The simplest way to put it: the characters are human. They make mistakes. They learn from them and grow. Every single one of White's books remains on my shelves because they aren't typical "fluff" reading. This book in the series can be read independently, but I would recommend reading the others - because they are worth the read. I received a complimentary copy On Wings of Devotion from the publishers. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

On Wings of Devotion by Roseanna White is the second book in her Codebreakers series. Philip Camden blames himself for the death of his whole flying squadron. Nurse Arabelle Denler sees Camden not as a “Black Heart” so much as a “hurting heart”. Together they will find healing, forgiveness and mercy. I loved how Ara stood up for herself and those she loved. The interaction and jokes between Ara and Camden were hysterical. I laughed out loud so many times throughout this book. There was a mystery in the story that kept you on the edge of your seat not knowing what to expect next. Roseanna again wove her love for the Lord through the story so beautifully. I can’t wait for the next book. I received this book from the author for my honest review.

This book was an absolute pleasure to read (which is no surprise since I love every single one of Roseanna White's books). As much as I loved the first book in this series, The Number of Love, I think I loved this one even more. I couldn't wait to learn more about Arabelle and Camden after first meeting them in the last book, and they did not disappoint! I love how deftly Roseanna wove a story of redemption and finding your worth and value in Christ into an exciting WWI tale full of spies and intrigue. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! And of course it was a joy to see the heroes and heroines of past books pop in now and then. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

On Wings of Devotion #2 The Codebreakers by Roseanna M. White There is so much to this story that captured me and held me glued to the pages. The two main characters, Arabelle Denler and Phillip Camden—who is called Black Heart, are wonderfully portrayed. Arabelle is a strong, caring, forgiving and godly woman. As a nurse these attributes are evident in the care of her patients, interaction with her fellow nurses and those around her. As a retired RN I especially enjoyed reading a little of the nursing practices of the time period. Her faith is so much a part of her it overflows in all she does. I love that she prays for Phillip even before she ever met him in person. I could feel her uncertainty in regards to herself and her longing for someone to love her and to have a family. Our hero, Phillip, is one handsome man. He is strong, loyal and very wounded. The experiences in his past, and most recently, have hardened his heart—hence the name, Black Heart. However, there is more to him than a black heart, even if he does not recognize it. The tragedy of the loss of his men weigh heavily on his heart and his pain is evident in all he does. I think working in Room 40 with other codebreakers is really good for him even though he doesn’t see it at first. I love that once he meets Arabelle and gets to know her a little, he makes himself her protector. I feel sure God has His hand in this. I enjoyed the interaction between Arabelle and Phillip and their growing feelings toward each other. They are perfect for each other. The ending is all that I hoped it would be and more. I enjoyed the author’s historical notes at the end of the book. The historical aspects of the story are woven within the fictional story-line and weave an amazing story. A story filled with espionage, deceit, spies, honor, integrity, danger, suspense, love, faith and reconciliation. ~I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~

On Wings of Devotion By Roseanne M. White This book is the second in the Codebreakers series. The first one was great and this one was as well. Codebreaking was not as important in this story as it was in the first novel but was in the background. The characters took center stage as they learned to live beyond perception, forgive and love in this story. Labeled Black Heart, Phillip Camden carries the heaviness of war after losing his crew. The secrets he carries from that day eat him and nothing anyone can do or say will pull him from the darkness. Arabelle Denler may be rich but finding love, real love is not something she believes possible. She is plain and average in every way. Rather than wallow in her situation, she takes action and becomes a nurse. Serving at the military hospital she watches as the handsome Black Heart walks to work each day. Having a mutual friend brings these two broken hearts together. Not looking for love but for healing, both Phillip and Arabelle find that God's love is the answer and His love can cover all. I am now waiting excitedly for the third installment of this series. I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

On Wings of Devotion, book two from The Codebreakers by Roseanna M White is now my favorite book I have read by her to date. Even though it is part of a series, I believe it can be read as a stand alone. The historical details were so vivid in this one, I felt like I was part of the story. I loved the chemistry between the two main characters, Arabelle and Camden. The plot has a lot I love in a book: adventure, romance, suspense and faith. I could not ask for much more than that. I give On Wings of Devotion five plus stars. I look forward to book three from The Codebreakers to see what will happen next. I received this book from the author, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
