Ten years. Five women. One concert.

Your reunion was never this good. Or this complicated.

A decade ago, Callie Smalls walked away from her top-selling, all-girl music group to pursue her solo career in fashion and television. The other four members—Angie, Tabitha, Mandy, and Daphne—were left high and dry, scrambling to move on from a life of recording studios, worldwide tours, and everything that goes with fame and fortune.

Following her stint hosting the acclaimed reality TV show, Made for Me, Callie realizes that the only way to boost her fading career is to book a one-night-only reunion gig at a major music festival. Without talking to her former bandmates. Scattered across the country, at different points in their lives, can they come together to rekindle the magic in their music?

A soccer mom whose husband doesn't know about her past. A fading star, sacrificing all to stay in the spotlight just one second more. A party girl, challenged with her most important role yet. A tiger mom, fighting for her son. A desperate woman, unhappy and alone.

A lot can change in the course of a decade. Will it be harmony or hatred for the Sassy Cats?

About the Author

Telling stories of resilient women, Kathryn R. Biel hails from Upstate New York where her most important role is being mom and wife to an incredibly understanding family who don't mind fetching coffee and living in a dusty house. In addition to being Chief Home Officer and Director of Child Development of the Biel household, she works as a school-based physical therapist. She attended Boston University and received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from The Sage Colleges. After years of writing countless letters of medical necessity for wheelchairs, finding increasingly creative ways to encourage insurance companies to fund her client's needs, and writing entertaining annual Christmas letters, she decided to take a shot at writing the kind of novel that she likes to read. Kathryn is the author of many women's fiction, romantic comedy, contemporary romance, and chick lit works, including the award-winning Live for This and Made for Me.

Loosely modeled on The Spice Girls, this is a fun and heart-warming novel of how the five women of the uber-popular group The Sassy Cats find their way back together again, after a ten year hiatus, and why this is good for them. Disclaimer: I'm acquainted with the author via social media. Not having grown up a fan of most "manufactured" musical groups, I was surprised by how quickly I became invested in the stories. Each Sassy Cat had her own story, her own wounds and wishes, her own personality, but of course, the five stories overlapped, especially as the date approached for their big reunion show. As a writer myself, I was super-impressed with how skillfully that was done. One character was black, one Asian, one lesbian, but that didn't particularly make a significant difference in how they were portrayed. There was more focus on the motherhood of three of the women, one having very recently given birth. There was a bit of weight loss talk that made me slightly uncomfortable, but that IS a reality in performing arts, the expectation to present as a certain size/shape, and it was handled with sensitivity. The ending is not a cliffhanger - but it was mostly happy, and very realistic in that not all the problems and interpersonal conflicts the women faced on their journey to the big show were neatly resolved. If you were a fan of girl groups, or even if you weren't, I think you'll really enjoy these tails, er, tales, of the Sassy Cats. I certainly did.

Reviewed by Samantha March for Readers' Favorite I have read Kathryn R. Biel's work in the past, and her books have always been such fun to read. I was so intrigued by the premise of Once In a Lifetime – a former girl group getting together for a reunion concert. Um, yes please! The Sassy Cats is made up of Callie, Angie, Tabitha, Mandy and Daphne, and ten years after their breakup, each women has changed, and not all for the better. Readers get an insight into each character, their life currently, and how they decided to live post stardom. The women are not necessarily close after putting away their microphones, but all agree – if somewhat hesitantly – to do the reunion show. And that’s when things start to unravel. Once in a Lifetime read pretty quickly, not only because of the fast moving storyline, but because it was simply fun to read. I did enjoy getting to know each of the characters, though some were more likeable than others, and the build up to the end was rising with each chapter. Because there are five main characters and each one needed to tell their story, I found myself wanting just a little bit more from each one, or a little more back story explained throughout, but I understand having that many characters with fun stories means shortening up here and there. Still a very solid and fun chick lit book that kept me invested throughout the story. Kathryn R. Biel is a talented writer that I would recommend for chick lit fans.

Yet another awesome book from Kathryn Biel! Once I started reading I couldn't put this one down. I always feel her characters are so easy to relate to. You can easily see yourself in anyone of the Sassy Cats. Once in a Lifetime makes you think can you ever really go back to what you had before? It was great to see Callie Smalls in another one of Ms. Biel's books. I love how she ties some of the books together but doesn't leave you in the dark if this is your first one. Can't wait to see what she comes out with next!
