(Reviewer's note: This story addresses abuse of the lead female. It is revealed through flashbacks and memories, and may be painful to read or a trigger for some. Please take this into consideration before reading further and/or purchasing this book.) There were a lot of tender moments in this story that, for me, overshadowed Jess' bad memories. The most poignant and palpable was close to the beginning, when Jess' Grampy took her away from the life she was living for a chance to start over. It wasn't the reason he took her away. It was the sadness of the moment, when they said goodbye knowing they may or may not see each other again, that really had me hoping life turned out better for Jess. For a while, it did. A great career, great place to live, amazing friends. Honestly, her life was a million times better than before. Except the past she ran from caught up to her just as she was about to celebrate one of her best friend's marriage. Talk about sucky timing. I was wondering when Cole would realize something wasn't right with Jess. He'd met her before, hadn't stopped thinking about her while she was away, but there was just something about her this time that didn't add up. She was edgy and jumpy, and her actions proved something was wrong to him. But while I wanted Jess to see that Cole (plus her friends) would and could help her, I also wanted Cole to find where he belonged. I know the summary stated that he struggled to find his place on the family ranch. Sometimes a statement like that gets glossed over in the writing, a missed point as the character moves through the story. But Ms. McGinnis addressed it by showing it in Cole's actions, thoughts, and dialogue. If ever I wanted a person to realize how much he was needed and wanted right where he was, it would be Cole. Jess' past was undoubtedly ugly. The abuse she suffered growing up isn't anything I'd wish on anyone, child or adult, and the aftereffects are felt in her present day life though she does her damnedest to hide it. Thing is, you can only hide something like for so long before someone notices and wonders. Through everything Jess faced, Cole was there. He could have walked away, said he didn't want to deal with it, when she found the strength to finally seek help from him and their friends. But he didn't. In him, she didn't just find a man who would defend her against the world, she found a man who'd love her despite everything dark in her. Ms. McGinnis is a new author for me and this is a new series for me as well. While I do recommend reading the first two (which I'll have to do fairly soon myself), this can be read as a standalone. I promise, you'll like it. The darkness of Jess' past is nothing compared to the brightness of the future she has with Cole. He gave her a reason to trust and love again. She gave him a reason to call a place home. (Received from NetGalley via Tasty Book Tours for an honest review)

## Just OK for me, I'm afraid. First, it was too long for me. The secondary characters were barely "secondary". Giving them less page time could've and should've shortened this quite a bit. Also, it seemed to me these same secondary characters were the only reason these two even got together. They were being pressured from all sides to hook up, thus feeling forced. Furthermore, this was a little too PG for me. I don't need erotica, but a few steamy scenes would've been nice. Not bad, just not for me. The witty banter was fun though.

I read it all on one afternoon. Its a beautiful love story that touches on some very serious subjects. The story is so well written and the characters are so well developed you just cant help being drawn into it all. The overall family dynamics adds to the beauty of the story.

Once Upon a Cowboy is the third book in the Whisper Creek by Maggie McGinnis. So we've gotten glimpses of the chemistry between Jess and Cole throughout this series, and now we finally get their story. Like the previous two books in the series, the romance is addictive and intoxicating. I love that the characters are so close knit, and we get to see how main characters from the previous two book are doing too. I want these people as my friends. Reading Once Upon a Cowboy makes me want to move to Montana and open a dude ranch of my own! Seriously, let's go! The ARC of Once Upon a Cowboy by Maggie McGinnis was kindly provided to me by the publisher for review. The opinions are my own.

Loved this book except for the abuse factor... Fortunately it happened in the past and we know that Jess is good now... Still, it makes one think about the childhood abuse that exists in this world and for some readers it could be very uncomfortable... But t is another beautifully written, brilliant told story with family characters carried over from previous books... Will continue to read this author who is a wonderful story teller...

Maggie Mcginnis has written a very fun and sexy story about two people that are perfect for each other. Love the witty banter between the two main characters.

I read this book in just a few hours! I am a fan of love stories that take time to unfold because really, who falls in love in two days ? The hero is funny and sweet and strong enough to take on the heroine's very real problems. There is humor galore as well as some really heartbreaking, tender moments. I just found this author and read all three books in the series in one weeend. I can't wait for the new swries to start

Could there be more perfect man, than Cole, the cowboy?! And yes, he has his faults and weaknesses, but he is caring, loving, tender, dependable, and then some. He is restless in his skin at the ranch, wondering if he is just settling down in his life, or really going after what he wants. I love the family unit that they are, how they are there for each other, have each other's back when needed, and giving each other hard time when it's called for. Jess has had a terrible childhood, she has experienced things that no one ever should, in the hands of the people who should be there for you, love you, and protect you. The reflections back into her childhood are heartbreaking, raw, and cruel. She has come far from that place of cruelty she grew up in, emotionally. There were such a deep scars in her mind and body from those tender years, and facing her nightmares again, will finally start the true healing. Together Cole and Jess are adorable. They have a bond, chemistry, and connection. They are fun, delightful, and cute. They make a great team, and just get each other. I loved the communication between them, the long talks they were getting to know each other, building the trust, falling in love. This story had me in tears from the pain of the memories Jess has, it made me smile and sigh from the absolutely swoon worthy scenes, that Cole and Jess create together. The characters are developed, likable and admirable. The life they have lived has not been easy, but they have made the best of it. The story surely made an impact, and will stay with me for a long time ~ Five Spoons!

Once Upon a Cowboy is the best of an awesome series. This time we see not only the growing connection between Jesse and Colt, but we discover, and feel, her heart wrenching background, a background that is catching up to her and trying to destroy any chance of happiness at Whisper Creek.

5 – I need a cowboy – Stars „Once upon a cowboy” was the first McGinnis book I’ve read and now that I read this book, I definitely have to read the other books from this trilogy. It had anything, that a great romance book needs: a great big romance, humor and a lot of Emotion. Jess is leaving for Whisper Creek for her best friend’s wedding, when a phone call brings back the memories from her past. A past no one knows about, not even her best friends Kyla and Hayley. Her dark secrets, of which she lied to her friends for years, are the reason, why she never lets her relationships go beyond the third date. She is basically hiding anything from everyone and shows a totally different face on the outside, than she feels inside. Cole, a blue-eyed Cowboy with dimples and a rock-hard body, wanted Jess since the first day he saw her on the ranch two years ago. When both face each other again, they feel an instant connection again. When Jess looks the handsome cowboy in the eyes, she knows she has to keep her already broken heart locked up. She can’t risk the fact, that he gets to know her secrets and reveals, who she really is. While Jess struggles with her problems, Cole has his own worries. Standing in the shadows of his brother, he is not sure, how his future on the ranch will turn out. But when Jess steps back into his life, there is only one thing he’s sure about: He has to convince her to trust him and, no matter what problems are in her life, stay with him forever. This book was a well-written, very sweet story with strong characters, who were well worked out. Jess, with her very hard childhood, is a strong woman, who earns my respect. Cole on the other side is such a great guy and deeply cares for Jess. He knows that he has to fight for her and no matter how big her problems might be, he wants her. This story shows that you can work everything out if you have someone by your side, who loves you. So if you like heart-wrenching love story’ s with drama and a happy ending, don’ t wait any longer and grab this book. You won’t regret it and when you finished the book, you know that you will have a loving smile on your face. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Once Upon a Cowboy and my heart went out to Jessayn Alcott or Jess as she is known. A women with a troubled and hidden past, she escapes with a new name and identity. Her new friends have no idea the horrid history that is behind her and she escapes into the beautiful Whisper Creek Ranch were she had met Cole Driscoll. Cole and Jess have had this flirty relationship/friendship, everyone else can see that they belong together – but them. Once Upon a Cowboy has all that a book needs to offer – laughter, romance, tears and great dialogue. Maggie McGinnis does a great job of writing and capturing the audiences attention with the likeable Jess and the delectable Cole. Who needs more than a hot cowboy in a ranch? No more is needed to be said. The chemistry and connection between the two characters is felt the entire book and the storyline is great. I definitely would recommend Once Upon a Cowboy this summer to anyone who needs a good book and storyline …

Jess has kept her secrets at bay for 13 years, but now her past seems to be coming back to haunt her. She's never told anyone so she has no one to turn to for help. When she returns to her best friends at Whisper Creek for another wedding, she sees Cole again, the hot cowboy she adores but needs to stay away from. She knows he's too good for someone as damaged as her. Cole has known for a while now that Jess is someone he wants by his side, but she's like a frightened filly. He has to take it slow so she'll trust him, but he wants her to stay at Whisper Creek. Will he be able to convince her? Once Upon a Cowboy is a complex love story to keep you absorbed from the onset. Intense characters with close bonds mingle with sharp tugs on your heart as they show love, compassion, and strength. I always love a ranch setting, hot cowboys, kids and horses to go along with a close-knit cast of characters. The ending was superb, with Cole being there for Jess when she needed him the most. The love was evident and the feelings, tear-worthy. Maggie McGinnis is a new-to-me author and Once Upon a Cowboy was definitely a meaningful, thoughtful romance that tickled my reading fancy! 5 Stars!

5 - "Once upon a time... There was a handsome cowboy prince." Stars! I love this series, think of every word you can for good, and that sums up my feelings about Whisper Creek. Every book in the series has delivered more than I expected it to, and I had extremely high expectations in the first place. But Maggie McGinnis has once again given me the story that I wanted so much, but added so many more facets to it that I didn’t even realize it needed. ”There’s nothing regular about you.” Cole Driscoll and Jess Alcott have been circling around each other for the past two years, having met originally when she and her two friends journeyed to Whisper Creek Ranch for a girly holiday, they have built up a bond, and a pretty solid friendship in the intervening visits. ”Seems to be a common problem for you Boston gals. One whiff of Whisper Creek air, and you’re all packing your bags to move out here.” But neither of them is quite sure how much further they are looking to go, the feelings are definitely mutual, and watching her friends meet and fall in love with the cowboys of their dreams has given her plenty of food for thought, as it has with Cole, seeing his brother and his best friend fall; hook, line and stirrup for Jess’s friends. You get a sense in the previous books that there is more to Jess than meets the eye… and Maggie gave this woman one of the most heart-breaking back-stories I have read in a while, but it is the positives that you pull from it, as although her start in life is not the most nurturing or supportive, she has bettered herself and is living her life on her own terms. Cole’s potential inclusion into that life going forward, and her gradual revelation of who she actually is to him, and Hayley and Kyla (books One & Two) as the secrets of her past start to catch up with her, really keep you engrossed in this book. Add to that the continual flicker of feeling between her and Cole, as well as the decisions he is trying to make about his own future, and I felt myself going through pretty much every emotion you can for this couple. Maybe at Whisper Creek… she’d finally discovered a home. This series has been absolutely stellar, I loved the epilogue in this one, but I hope Maggie hasn’t finished telling stories of Carefree, Montana, the Whisper Creek family may have had their 'happily ever afters', but there are a few people that pop up in the books that I would like to see get their stories told as well, Jenny and Michael spring to mind straight away, but with the expansion of the ranch and the Driscoll’s business interests in general, I hope that there is scope for more books, or maybe some sort of spin-off series. Yoga instructor Jessalyn Alcott radiates peace, calm, and serenity—on the outside. Inside, she still feels like the broken, desperate girl from the trailer park. She’s got dark secrets she can’t share, which is why she never lets her relationships go beyond the third date. But when she travels to the Whisper Creek dude ranch for a friend’s wedding, Jess is enchanted by a cowboy whose deep blue eyes, dimpled smile, and rock-hard body make it tough to remember why she keeps running scared. Cole Driscoll has struggled to find his place on a family ranch where he’s always played second fiddle. His future might be uncertain, but he’s sure of one thing: He wants Jess by his side. Easier said than done. When it comes to getting close, she’s full of excuses, and he longs to fix the hurt he sees in her eyes. Now that she’s at Whisper Creek, there’s nothing he wants more than to break down the walls around her heart and heal her pain with the power of love. My Thoughts Jess started over 13 years ago, leaving behind a life that no child should have to live. Changing her name, going to college, starting her own business and generally building a life to be proud of. 2 years ago visiting Whisper Creek Montana for the first time where her friend Kyla met the eldest Driscoll brother, Kyla than fell in love and then got married while Jess and her other friend Haley attended the wedding. Now a year later it is Haley who is marrying and once again Jess finds herself going to Whisper Creek, however before she leaves she is shocked to be faced once again with a past she longs to forget. When it is revealed to reader what Jess is hiding it will make your heart hurt for what she went through as a child before finally escaping at age 16. It will also make you angry on Jess’s behalf, both as a child and as the traumatized adult she grew into. Cole is a real sweetheart, lovely with children as well as those unsure or afraid of horses and riding. Best of all he has patience and understanding rather than acting abruptly when it comes to Jess as she has trust issues to overcome. Easy flow, likable well developed characters, elements of suspense and drama, contemporary cowboy western romance that I enjoyed from beginning to end. Only wish now had read previous two books as would have loved to watch the series unfold from beginning for inhabitants of Whisper Creek. [EArc from Netgalley in exchange for honest review]

Oh, I loved this book! I love all of Maggie's books but this one was so sweet yet so intense and sexy. Intense because of the heroine and her hurtful past and what her family did to her(makes you want to go and kick their butts for her) and sexy because the tension between Jessalyn and Cole gradually builds and you are cheering for the couple. This is part of a series and the previous couples make appearances but you don't have to read the previous books to totally enjoy this book; it will only make you want to read those books too! I can't wait until the author's next book.

4.5 heartwarming stars Once Upon a Cowboy was such a good read, I couldn't put it down! I loved watching Cole and Jess fall in love, they were perfect for each other. Their love story touched my heart and I was so happy Jess finally found happiness after everything she had been through. Once Upon a Cowboy truly was a beautiful heartfelt love story and I highly recommend it and all the books from The Whisper Creek series.

I really liked this! I'm not quite sure why I didn't give it 5 stars, but I think I just wanted a little more in the ending, and the development of Jess and Cole's relationship. I really enjoyed all the characters, and I definitely want to read the previous books in the series! I'm especially looking forward to reading the first book in the series featuring Kyla and Decker, and I look forward to reading any future books in the series. I really like Maggie McGinnis' writing, I think she does a nice job of creating a full story. There are love scenes in this book, but they don't go into detail, they are just alluded to, and everything is pretty much wholesome. I liked Jess' tenacity, and even though she had a hard time standing up for herself, you could tell she is a strong woman who makes intelligent decisions, and Cole is wonderful, he's a manly cowboy with a fun sense of humor and a sweet heart. I like the ranch setting, and love cowboys, so that was a lot of fun and interesting. Jess and Cole are really cute together, and lots of fun, and they have an ease about them that just works. There's some tough things that happened to Jess, and Cole has a lot on his shoulders, but they both maintain a smile on their faces, and rooting for them was an easy task. A sweet, romantic read with 2 people who deserve happiness in their lives.

What a beautiful, emotionally charged story this was! Maggie McGinnis has written a book that will draw you in from the first chapter and take you on an emotional journey. She’ll make you smile and also have you grabbing a tissue, but in the end she has woven a tale that will make any doubter believe in happily ever afters. Cole and Jess have been dancing around the attraction they have towards one another for the past two years. Jess has once again returned to Whisper Creek dude ranch for Hayley and Daniel’s wedding and the sparks start flying from the moment she arrives. And of course everyone is pushing Cole and Jess together – which makes it hard for these two to resist each other. I loved watching these two come together, only to be confronted with obstacles that seemed insurmountable, which ultimately made their HEA even more special. Jess’s back story was just horrible. The life she lived before reinventing herself was painful to read about. I loved that she ultimately came out of those experiences a strong, resilient, and independent woman. Cole has also had some struggles with his past, feeling that he had to give up his dreams in order to help run the ranch after his dad passed. He is constantly wondering what he could have done or made of his life if circumstances were different. Now he’s also feeling the added pressure of trying to pick up the slack when his brother has to devote his attention to his other business ventures. As Jess and Cole begin their relationship they are both carrying around issues from their past that cause misunderstandings and hurdles that they need to clear. It was frustrating at times watching these two struggle to communicate and trust in each other, but the end result was certainly worth all the angst. The added drama of Jess’s past coming back in to play added a nice layer to the story. Watching Jess grow as she built up the strength to deal with her issues was wonderful. And seeing Cole support her without taking over and handling things himself made me just love him even more. I have come to love the Whispering Creek dude ranch and the wonderful family that has been built around it. This little slice of paradise in Montana has me smiling at the thoughts of real cowboys and trail rides, and has me hoping that Maggie McGinnis will be taking us back to Whispering Creek for a few more stories. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this read by Maggie McGinnis for me it was a very emotional touching read where the author touched my heart. There were places in this story that I set in OH MY GOD that is terrible where in other places I thought OH HOW SWEET. It is hard to outrun ones past as Jess finds out it has a way of coming back around and slapping you in the face. This is a read you will have a very strong reaction to, one minute you will be up high with Jess and the next you will hit rock bottom as she tells you the story of her past. Oh my what a past….. My heart really went out to both Jess and Cole for very different reason. Jess had a very hard and trying childhood with a mother who really didn’t care. When you throw in an ex who felt the same way it is hard to raise yourself up from the trash that seems to be your life. Cole feeling like he is second fiddle due to family issues he has had to run the ranch why his brother lived life and found his way. Cole is still trying to find his. Both of these were very heartbreaking touching reads that will stay with you long after you have turned the last page. Here are two people who have to overcome it all to find their place in the world with issues that could break them or make them. Jess has trouble trusting she has learnt never to, Cole just seems to be a playboy out for a good time. Things are not always as they seem….. The author gives you a wonderful plot with outstanding characters. She puts a few twists and turns to make it a very outstanding read. This story will reach in and grab your heart while breaking it, making you smile and will almost bring tears to your eyes. The author gives a compelling story of trust, anger, hurt, betrayal, love, friendship and of hope. I just adored Jess grandfather and wish so much that things could have been different. I loved how Jess overcome so much but still has to face her past. She has style and is a very strong giving woman who even in hard times gives it all she has to make a better life for her. Cole puts on a nice act but truly just wants a place to call his own, to belong and feel like an equal. He is a wonderful sexy cowboy. I loved the friends and Cole’s family they are just adorable and funny. I can’t think of one thing I didn’t like about this story, the ending will break your heart why leaving you with the biggest smile ever on your face. For me this was a WIN WIN read. If you love cowboys and a story with some touchy issues that will make you mad and want to kick some butts this is the book for you. You are going to so LOVE THIS author and her story.
