Overview

One Day at a Time by Danielle Steel, Dan John Miller

Danielle Steel celebrates families of every stripe in her compelling new novel—a tale of three very different couples who struggle and survive, love, laugh, and learn to take life…

Coco Barrington was born into a legendary Hollywood family, her last name loaded with expectations. Her mother is a mega-bestselling author who writes under the name of Florence Flowers—and her sister, Jane, is one of Hollywood’s top producers. They’re not your typical family by any means.…Jane has lived with her partner, Liz, for ten years, in a solid, loving relationship. Florence, widowed but still radiant, has just begun a secret romance with a man twenty-four years her junior. And Coco, a law school dropout and the family black sheep, works as a dog walker, having fled life in the spotlight for the artsy northern California beach town of Bolinas.

But when Coco reluctantly agrees to dog-sit in Jane’s luxurious home, she soon discovers how much things can change in just a matter of days.…It turns out Jane’s house comes complete with an unexpected houseguest: Leslie Baxter, a dashing but down-to-earth British actor who’s fleeing a psycho ex-girlfriend. Their worlds couldn’t be more different. The attraction couldn’t be more immediate.

Suddenly Coco is seeing things differently: Leslie is not just a celebrity, he’s a single dad to an adorable six-year-old girl. Her mother is not just a self-centered walking advertisement for great cosmetic surgery, she’s a woman in love, with vulnerability and new insight. And Jane and Liz are about to take the bravest plunge of all—into parenthood. As Coco contemplates a future with one of Hollywood’s hottest stars, as her mother and sister settle into their lives, old wounds are healed and new familes are formed—some traditional, some not so traditional, but all bonded by love.

With wit and intelligence, Danielle Steel’s new novel explores love in all its guises, taking us into the lives of three unusual but wonderfully real couples. Funny, sexy, and wise, One Day At a Time is at once moving, thought provoking, and utterly impossible to put down.

Coco Barrington, a law school dropout and dog walker, lives in a simple beach cottage in California and is trying to make the best of her life. But she knows she's a big disappointment to her legendary Hollywood family--her mother, a best-selling romance author, who is having an affair with a man half her age, and her movie producer sister Jane, who has been in a loving relationship with her partner Liz for over 10 years. Coco knows her relatives consider her a failure, but while resenting it she also feels there's nothing she can do about it. Then her sister Jane, who's expecting a baby, asks her to housesit while she and Liz go East on business. Coco reluctantly agrees and finds more than she bargained for in the person of a handsome British movie star, Leslie Baxter, who's also staying at the house while hiding from his crazy ex-girlfriend. They fall in love almost instantly and Coco contemplates a whole new life, until she's faced with the price of Leslie's fame by the unrelenting paparazzi who won't leave them alone. She drops him for a while but after coming to a new understanding of her mother's vulnerability, and her sister's bravery in facing motherhood, lifestyles that are different than her own but certainly worthwhile, Coco realizes her love for Leslie is strong enough to triumphant over any obstacles and they get back together. It also helps that her family now recognizes her good points. This is another great read from Danielle Steele who always writes with wit and understanding and lots of sexy fun. Hard to put down. There's a reason why Danielle Steel's been around forever...she's that good.

I have read Danielle Steele in the past and don't recall every being this disappointed. This story could have been told in 200 pages. Redundant and then the ending was so quick.

The plot was very good. However, like most of Danielle Steel's books it was wordy, repetitious and written at a 5th grade level. She could have told the story in half the pages. The characters were very real. I'd have to think a long time before reading another of her books.

This was the first Danielle Steel book I read...and I loved it. I could see where the main character was coming from, and why she felt the way she did. I respected her for not being what everyone else wanted, and just being herself. I loved the guy, Leslie, as well...and if I ever met a guy like him I'd consider myself lucky. It was a great read and I would recommend it to any romance fans.

Again, DS gives us what we crave; a period in time where we are allowed to escape and imagine another life, where everything is warm and comfortable, cozy and safe, opulent and sophisticated.... with, of course, a few bumps and bruises along the way :). However, it is obvious why she can write 4 or 5 of these per year.... She repeats the same statements over and over to fill up a book. I find that very sad for such a talented writer. I would rather have one per year with some substance than the path she has chosen for money. Her "novels" in the early years were larger, more impressive and filled with in-depth research. They were truly like reading a history book or at the very least a great reference book. Today, they are what I call "mindless/numbless" reading, but.... I'm not saying that's a bad thing! We all need a little "escape" now and then and DS delivers. I found this book to be one of her more simple topics. It was a good, easy read but not much substance. I still enjoyed it and will always read whatever she publishes, just to keep my 100% read status intact, but this will not be remembered as a favorite.

Becoming involved into this story was probably on of the easiest books yet! The first page will tug at your curiosity and keep you wanting to read further. She has a way of keeping you turning the pages for finding answers to your questions about whom did what or who is going to find out the big secret! Danielle is a fantastic writer and this book kept me so involved that I couldn't put it down. The family is as another current family in today's society which deals with similar situations. The age differences, the gay relationship and the love story is so compelling that you have to wonder why anyone couldn't accept this situation as a family of today. The age difference of her mother's lover is no different than in today's society but when actually reading it,it makes you wake up and realize how real love is possible regardless of the age. They say that age is a number, which in this case isn't important but it leaves you wondering what brought them together, the money or fame or is it true love? The heartbreaks, the renewed love, the child who brings all the couples closer, what more could you ask for? She ended the story with a possibility to continue this love story, which I hope she does. Danielle writes all love stories but this is so connected to the families of today so maybe some can relate and connect to this story and learn what life has to offer. I would buy this book for an easy read or for a boring day but once you start, you won't be able to put it down. Take a day that you can make the time to read, this will keep you thirsting for more.Regardless of what you select to read, start with a book by Danielle, she will teach you about the different levels of real love!

Honestly, I didn't think I would like this book. My grandmother gave it to me as something to read at work. I absolutly LOVED this book! This was the first Danielle Steel book I have read. I felt so connected to the characters. I would love to see a sequel.

I have been reading Danielle Steel books since I was a teenager. My Mom lived to read them and know I do. You cannot go wrong reading one of her books. She is an excellent storyteller.

Good story. Danielle Steel uses her usual format of the wealthy and popular for her characters. Romance throughout with a few surprises. More involved/detailed stories than her first novels. Don't care for the homosexual aspect in this story although it works here with the familial problems.

I have always enjoyed how Danielle develops her characters and draws you into their lives. I've read every book she's written and am so very excited when I see she's released yet another.
