One O'Clock Hustle (Inspector Rebecca Mayfield Series #1) by Joanne Pence

North American Book Award recipient in Mystery

When San Francisco Homicide Inspector Rebecca Mayfield arrives at the scene of a deadly shooting, she's shocked to find that the witnesses have caught the killer, and that he's someone she knows. Rebecca's a by-the-book detective, and she's always done her job according to the rules, without hesitation ... until Richie Amalfi comes back into her life.

Richie knows his way around everything and everyone in his city. When people say they "know a guy who knows a guy," Richie's the guy they're talking about. He can usually help people out of tight situations, but suddenly finds he can't get himself out of hot water when he's accused of murder.

Richie's on the run, and he runs straight to Rebecca to help him prove his innocence. From the nightclubs of North Beach to the scenic heights of Twin Peaks, dangers lurk and more deaths happen. As Rebecca discovers there's a lot more to Richie than she thought, and a lot more to like than she imagined, she soon fears not only for her life, but also her heart.

I enjoyed this book but I honestly had trouble reading more than a few pages at a time. Normally I will read a book like this in less than an hour. It just had an uneven cadence which was just plain difficult to get into.

It wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't particularly good either. Wishy washy, right? Well, that's how this book hit me. It started in a manner indicating a history between Rebecca & Richie. One moment, it reads as if the reader should have previous knowledge about both their relationship and about other characters in the story. The next moment, it reads as what it is: the 1st book in a new series. The pacing of the story was jerky. The dialogue was stilted and awkward one moment and smooth the next. I kept waiting for the book to get better, but it never really did. The actual mystery was okay, but that, alone, isn't enough to redeem the book from mediocrity. I found myself skim-reading as opposed to really settling in to read with pleasure. I won't be reading the sequels, because I never really grew to care what happened to the characters.

This was great - a real crime solver with many layers of clues but hard to predict.

A good enough story, but it is almost a series book. It doesn't "end" end. The beginning of the next book is a month or two later without contact between the two main characters...which is where this story began

A little romance and a good amount of who-done-it.

Great weave of characters in a plot captivating in, somewhat, old style crime mystery. The romantic aspect intriguing and frustrating but entertaining as well.

I have never written a completely bad review, but the only good thing I can think to of is the punctuation was correct, mostly.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story held your attention and the characters were believable. Rebecca showed great maturity and skill as a detective. It was only 175 pages but didn't feel cheated on the story.
