Remarkably assured for a tender lad of 12 years, country sensation Billy Gilman gets the support of some top Nashville session players and producers on his debut album. And guess what? ONE VOICE gets the job done. Gilman brooks comparison to another kid phenom of years past, Tanya Tucker -- not just in the urgent timbre of his voice, but in his tackling, with maturity, situations you hope the typical 12-year-old doesn't have to worry about. Maybe the sober "What's Forever For" is Gilman's way of voicing the child's hurt in an all-too-common scenario of couples uncoupling, rather than an adult's questioning of whether to take the plunge again. And "Spend Another Night," an out-and-out love song, finds the tyke pledging eternal devotion to the gal of his dreams. Now who are we to suggest there's anything wrong with puppy love? He's got time to wise up. In the meantime, Billy tosses in some lively interpretations of Bobby Goldsboro's "Little Things" and the evergreen "Little Bitty Pretty One." The bonus track closes the album on a stirring note: Billy's right-on interpretation of Tammy Wynette's classic heartbreaker "'Til I Can Make It on My Own," complete with a booming production and a bravura vocal performance that startles with its sheer force. If he can hang in there until he reaches drinkin' age, the old boy might turn out to be a real champ.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Since "One Voice" made Billy Gilman the youngest person ever to place a song in the country singles charts, his pre-pubescent age is the unavoidable subtext of his debut album. Certainly, he's not the first pre-teen to make popular music, but the same problem always has to be faced: the usual subject of pop lyrics is romantic love, and what does that mean when the words are being sung by an 11 year old? At very least, there's a certain awkwardness, and the implications can be even more objectionable depending on the song. The producers of One Voice have mostly obviated this difficulty by choosing or writing harmless material. For example, the album begins with a rousing remake of Bobby Goldsboro's "Little Things," which perhaps can be viewed as a song being sung by a boy to his mother in this context. But what is one to make of the "bonus track" that closes the album, Tammy Wynette's "'Til I Can Make It on My Own"? The song's point, which in Wynette's version was that a woman might not be able to make a complete break with her romantic partner all at once, is out the window, but it would be a stretch to apply any other reading to those words, especially when Gilman, a sort of country-style choir boy, is singing it androgynously in Wynette's register. He is on much safer ground with the novelty "The Snake Song" and even the title track, which addresses grade school violence with religious platitudes. From LeAnn Rimes to Britney Spears, youth has been a major trend in popular music of the last few years, and Billy Gilman represents a new extreme, at least as far as country music goes. He can certainly carry a tune, and you can only hope that he won't be a has-been by the time his voice changes.

I saw Billy at the George Strait music fest in Landover, Md in June, And he just blew me away. It's hard to imagine that voice in such a young person. I wish him the very best.

I think this young man is a very wonderful singer when ever I hear his songs I always have to stop and listen. Your parents should be very proud. Thank you for singing so great.

'Absolutely astonishing!' is the least I could say about this CD. It is remarkable for such a young singer to present a totally outstanding breakthrough, and one can only imagine what the future holds for his musical career. As for more about the actual CD, with an amazing voice Billy Gilman is accompanied by rock'in band which provides a very delightful listening experience. Songs like 'Little Bitty Pretty One', 'I Think She Likes Me', and 'I Wanna Get to Ya' really make you want to dance with there irresistible rhythms. While other songs are slow and very sentimental like 'There's a Hero' and 'Oklahoma'. Hey, there's even humor in this one with, my favorite, the 'Snake Song'. It is actually the first CD where I can honestly say that I love every song on it, which makes it my favorite CD. I can't wait for the next one, keep 'em coming Billy, you doing great buddy!

I am 64 years old, and a lifelong fan of county music, but I have never heard of such a marvelous voice for such a young man. I think Billy Gilman has a great future in country music.

The lst time I heard this song, it was on CMT. I saw a boy riding a bus & heard this amazing song/voice. I have loved it ever since. I bought the CD. I am a Christian and it just warms my heart that it's about looking to God to help us. The hose song is strange(???). Oh well, the rest of the CD me and my young girls enjoy. Thanks, Billy!!

This kid is a natural singer born & bred like a true country star should be. his voice is absolutly amazing for a kid his age I just hope that he remains true to whats in his heart & doesnt let the stardom go to his head like dome others have.

I was fascinated and enthralled with the young man at the awards show. His voice is strong, wide ranged and is most articulate. I would like to hear him do a remake of Tommy McLain's ''Sweet Dreams.'' It'll go into the top ten!

Absolutely amazing! I totally loved ''Oklahoma''. To think a 12-year-old could make something so beautiful.

I saw a CD in K-Mart one day and it had this kid on it. Out of curiosity I purchased it and popped it in my CD player when I got home. The song was beautiful. The CD was the 'One Voice' single. Well, not long after, I saw Billy on the ACM awards, singing 'Roly Poly.' I knew I had to have the full CD as soon as it came out. And I did. Needless to say, it is now my favorite CD and one of the few on which I like every song.

I first heard One Voice on a local station, I saw the video for it. I am truly amazed by how this boy can sing!!!!! I seriously begged my parents for the cd and when I found it at the mall I was so excited, they had previews of most of the songs!! I don't listen to country much but if all of it is like what he sings I am changing my radio station! My favorite is Oklahoma, it makes me cry, but the snake song is cute and all the songs are wonderful! This would be a great CD for anyone, regardless of age or whether boy or girl, man or woman, or their likes or dislikes (unless they like heavy metal or something). Someone tell me where he is!
