The roar of the Romans could be heard at a great distance down the Tiber River. For thunderous was the applause, the stomping of feet of thousands of impatient spectators in the Arena.
Now Nero gave a sign, and an old man walked slowly to the iron gate amid silence and struck three times on the door. The iron gate creaked as it opened. The spectators sensed something unusual was about to happen. What new way of slaughter of Christians had Nero thought of now.
Two guards who accompanied Onesimus took off his chains, and out of the darkness he slowly walked into the Arena. The crowd roared as he quickly scanned the rows of spectators, hoping to see Leah one last time before death. He stood there, dressed only in a short tunic, naked from the waist up. Suddenly, at the motion of the Emperor, underneath the raised podium a door opened and a girl was thrust out. Her white silk dress soiled, her beautiful copper colored hair disheveled, and tears streaming down her face.
Another trumpet sounded and the spectators grew silent. The steel hinges creaked, and into the Arena charged a huge black German Bull.
