Although some rudimentary understanding of Buddhism would help you to get the most out of 'Opening the Hand of Thought', it seems to have been written with the beginner in mind. Uchiyama does a fine job of explaining the rationale for meditation and explains step by step the Soto Zen approach. He communicates with unusual clarity the significance of his religion in shaping his views of the world and its effect on the way he conducts his life. If you are interested in the role of meditation practice in Zen Buddhism, or if you just want to try meditation for any reason, Uchiyama's book is a must.
