Oswald is a blue octopus who stars in his own TV series on Nick Jr. This padded board book introduces readers to opposites and notes that they are all around us. In the opening spread, the text explains one pairing (in the sky/on the ground), but the picture offers much more. There is a sunny day on one side and a rainy day on the other. There is a tall building and a short building and that building is next to a tall thin one to show the comparison between short and fat versus tall and thin. In addition there are little and big trees, little and big gingerbread people, kids inside and outside the buildings, dark and light windows, a single bird and a flock of birds and that is all just on the opening spread. Parents and caregivers will need to look closely at this picture so they can make the most of the information presented. The other pages offer simpler scenes where it is easier to understand the pairingsbig/small, high/low, hot/cold, fast/slow, wet/dry, heavy/light, up/down, and finally day versus night. This little book is a good choice for kids in preschool, kindergarten or for a home library. 2003, Simon Spotlight/Simon & Schuster, Ages 1 to 4.
