Description: More than a book, this is a great guide for clinicians looking for fast and efficient information about oral soft tissue diseases. The design and the format make it a useful and refreshing tool for the busy clinician.
Purpose: This book was successfully designed as a helpful, concise and fast reference for clinicians wanting to know about specific oral soft tissue lesions. The lesions are classified according to appearance, which is a great idea for rapid consult in a daily practice. Moreover, the subjects are marked with tabs, so the reader can go immediately to the needed lesion.
Audience: The objective, according to the authors, was to write a book for busy practitioners in any field of dentistry. They certainly meet this objective. The authors show very impressive credentials. Their expertise covers all the different aspects discussed in the book.
Features: The book covers common oral lesions that practitioners may encounter in the dental office. This is the largest section and is divided according to the physical characteristics of the lesion. The authors provide synonyms, etiology, typical visual cues, useful information, differential diagnosis, diagnostic steps, treatment, clinical significance, and a picture for each lesion. At the end, there are special topics related to the lesions such as pharmacology (specific to the management of the lesions), cancer related topics, etc. The best of this book is the design. It is really what the authors claim. It is concise, effective, clear, and direct. It has a lot of pictures and the lesions are described consistently in an organized manner. The lack of detailed description, histology, and organized references may be considered a shortcoming, but one must remember the purpose of the book. This is not a complete textbook.
Assessment: This is a high quality book that will help the busy practitioner on a regular basis. It is difficult to compare with other books because I have not seen other pathology books with this unique design.
