Organic Outreach for Families: Turning Your Home into a Lighthouse by Kevin & Sherry Harney

In Organic Outreach for Families, Kevin and Sherry Harney share insights from the Scriptures and give practical advice from their own experience to help you learn how to transform your home into a lighthouse of God’s amazing grace.

The Harneys discuss five ways you can naturally share your faith with others:

  • Reaching your own children with the message of Jesus
  • Sharing God’s grace with your extended family
  • Raising your children to be beacons of light in their schools and in the neighborhood
  • Opening the doors of your home to make it attractive and welcoming
  • Shining the light of grace into your broader community

The Harneys balance a concern for developing your home into a safe, secure environment with the biblical mandate for believers to be salt and light in the world. Pastors and parents will discover creative ways families can become a natural and winsome presence in their schools, through community activities, and as a witness in their neighborhoods.

This book takes us on a journey learning how to introduce our children, families, and communities to Jesus and His life through everyday life. It is full of practical applications and links to more resources in each area. Several times I thought the only way to improve on what they’ve done would be to have them visit each of us and help tailor things to our particular situation. Starting with reaching our own children, moving through how to share with unbelieving relatives, and ending with practical ways to make an impact on our communities, the Harneys set themselves a big task and fulfill it winsomely. The Harneys are experienced in many ways and it shows throughout the book. Their 3 grown sons each contributed essays to support their parents’ message, which is a wonderful testimony for a pastor’s family. Sprinkled throughout the book are examples of how their lives have been used by God in each area they are covering. What I most appreciated about this book was the balance the Harneys achieved, both inspiring us to aim higher, and encouraging us no matter how far we have to go. It was just a little discouraging trying to picture myself mimicking Mrs. Harney’s style of outreach. She’s a born server who revels in cooking and casual entertaining. I’m not. The book does point out outreach will look different for each person but doesn’t flesh out what this might look like. If you tend to think you have to “do it all”, you’ll probably find parts of the book overwhelming! My suggestion is to keep in mind your family’s spiritual gifts and ask God for wisdom to find how to consciously reach out to people around you based on the way He designed you. The Harney’s book is certainly a great place to start the conversation. Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com blogger review program. I was not required to write a positive review; this review reflects what I think of the book. Reposted from my blog.

As a Christian, I know that it is important and necessary for me to spread God's light throughout my community. The problem has always been, "how do I do this?" It's hard to talk about God at my job (and I can get in trouble for it too!). So how and where can I share God's light? Organic Outreach for Families discusses some practical ways you can turn your home into a lighthouse. It starts with your children. Raise them up in the way they should go and teach them to be God's light to others. This book gives some tips on how to help your children learn about God and share Him with others. It also talks about inviting people in to your home which I think has been the most difficult part for me. I invite people in and I try to be as inviting as possible, but people just don't come. I was hoping that this book would explain a little more about how to get them to come, but it does not really. It does talk about how to make your home welcoming, but if people just won't come in to your home it's hard to know what else you can do. I did like the chapter about spreading God's word to people in your family. I know there are some people in my family that I would like to know God better. I don't know too well what's going on in their lives and I think I should be closer with them anyway. Maybe this is my opportunity to do so. All in all, this is a book with some great starting off points if you want to outreach to your community and your family and "turn your home into a lighthouse.

Organic Outreach For Families Turning Your Home Into A Lighthouse written by Kevin G. Harney and Sherry Harney This introduction was taken from page 12 in this book... "This book, shows what God's call to share our faith in natural, organic ways means in the context of the home. Its to help ordinary families, to make a God-honoring impact right where HE has placed them. Most examples and illustrations involve families with parents and children living at home. But the content will also be helpful for newly married couples, empty nesters and any Christian who wants their home to be a place where the light of Gods grace shines." This book was written into three parts, which each has four explanations and/or illustrations to help you with the do's and don'ts as the how to achieve them. There are many Scriptures throughout, which I always enjoy and believe are important when writing books such as this type of book. It is not what I call "over written" and it is easy to read and understand with helpful ideas. Although I live with my husband and his sister and her husband , it was very useful. I will re-read this book and take more time to get more on things I can do to help this home to be a lighthouse for GOD! God bless you all in the family of the Harney's and may HE continue to use you to further the Gospel and for HIS Glory. In Jesus Name Amen.
