Overview

The Organization of American States (OAS) brings together the 35 nations of North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. Together, OAS members strive to strengthen peace and security; to consolidate representative democracy; to provide for collective defense; to eradicate poverty; and to promote economic, social, and cultural development. The pursuit of regional solidarity came to the fore in 1889-1890, at the First International Conference of American States. Years later, after World War II, the governments in the Americas adopted a system of collective security to meet the challenges of global conflict in a postwar world and to fight Communism. Beyond its commitments to democracy, human rights, and social and economic development, the OAS is working to establish a free-trade area that will extend from Alaska, at the northwestern tip of North America, to Tierra del Fuego, at the southernmost tip of South America.
