Pro-Action Publishing (PO Box 26657, Los Angeles, CA 90026) publishes this revised and updated edition of Martial Arts--Traditions, History, People (1983, Smithmark Publishers, Inc.). Carefully and thoroughly assembled, the entries encompass detailed descriptions of several dozen traditions, histories of martial arts in various parts of the world and in motion pictures, and profiles of major pioneers. Organizations and associations are described, but contact information is lacking. The bibliography is extensive and classified, but has not been updated. Includes many b&w photos. Assembled before computers were commonplace, this encyclopedia is clearly the fruit of great dedication. Its less-than-slick production somehow lends to its charm. Annotation c. This book is supposed to be a revision of the 1983 title, "Martial Arts: Tradition, History, People". It is not. Beyond the preface, it was extremely difficult to find any line of text that was changed. In fact, in the revision the text appears on exactly the same pages in the same place as that of the earlier edition. There are some additional photographs that fill up what was blank space in the first edition as well as a few new photographs. The bibliography remains the same as that in the first edition
Any library with the first edition of this book need not purchase the second. Any library that did not purchase the first edition should be aware that while this new edition is a good source of information on a popular topic, with the exception of a few photo captions, it includes no information regarding martial arts since 1982. The interesting entry on martial arts in film and television, for instance, discusses nothing more recent than 1982 in the text, though a few photographs are more recent. A truly revised update would be a valuable and popular work.
