Overview

As their blue-eyed soul peer Michael McDonald did with his Motown collections, Daryl Hall and John Oates revisit the soul music of their youth on this album of covers. Recorded at Hall's home studio in the Bahamas, Our Kind of Soul, recasts a bushel of classics with organic interpretations. Since Hall & Oates hail from the City of Brotherly Love, it's no surprise that some of the songs come from the Philly International vaults of composers/producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. Among the notable examples of their revamped Philly soul classics is the O'Jays' "Used to Be My Girl," updated with a funky drum-loop, an acoustic reading of the Spinners' "I'll Be Around," and a romantic, more adult contemporary take on Teddy Pendergrass's "Love TKO." Elsewhere, the dynamic duo lend their timeless harmonies to a stripped-down arrangement of Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love" and a thumping version of Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady." Most impressive are the original compositions sprinkled throughout, including the yearning "Soul Violins," distinguished by Hall's ever-soulful falsetto, and the string-laden, electric guitar-accented "Let Love Take Control." With Our Kind of Soul, Hall & Oates continue to honor the R&B legacy that's become such an inextricable part of their rock-'n'-soul sound.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Considering that soul has been at the foundation of Hall & Oates' sound throughout their career -- even their early folk-rock records had soulful underpinnings -- it only made sense for the duo to eventually cut their own soul tribute album. As the title suggests, that's exactly what 2004's Our Kind of Soul is: Hall & Oates' spin on their favorite soul sounds. This includes, of course, heavy doses of Philly soul and Motown, along with other smooth soul of the '70s. Most of the album is devoted to covers -- usually familiar tunes like "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "I'll Be Around," and "Used to Be My Girl," yet there are a couple of more obscure entries and a heavily rewritten "I Can Dream About You" (in his excellent track-by-track liner notes Daryl Hall reveals that Dan Hartman wrote the song with the duo in mind) -- but there is a handful of originals that fit into the vibe quite well, such as the lush "Soul Violins" and "Let Love Take Control." All the songs, whether they're covers or originals, are given a clean yet warm production similar to the pair's successful 2003 comeback effort, Do It for Love, but this is a little more laid-back and unassuming. Consequently, it doesn't make as big of an impression, but it's a friendly, mellow affair that finds Hall & Oates in good form. It's not quite as strong as Do It for Love, and its tasteful relaxed vibe may strike some fans of their '80s hits as being a little sleepy, but for longtime fans who like the folky Atlantic material as much as their blue-eyed soul, this is a nice, enjoyable listen.

Daryl and John give a refreshing new vibe to some old motown classics. Spinners I'll Be Around is smooth, yet upbeat with crisp clear vocals and modern music tracking...Without completely overhauling the tunes, this duo provides their own interpretation while preserving the original song...Each track is similiar to their original but infused with the jazzy soul duo's better with age vocals. Highly recommended for all ages.

This new album by Hall and oats is terrific. I was leary of the idea of Hall and oates doing "cover songs", but they breathe life into old classics, making them their own with their own soulful voices and melodies. Worth the cash you spend. You will enjoy -lots os listening pleasure!

I cannot tell you how good it is to hear Hall and Oates singing loudly from my cd player. I am even more happy that they have not tried to "reinvent" themselves, but have stuck to their own harmonieous sound. That is what makes them unique. This is why I love them-they still sound rich in vocals and groove muscially too. I love them, I love them, I love them!!! "TESLA"

Hall and Oates have put together a set of great classics with several new songs, and put it together in one CD-Our Kind Of Soul. It’s a wonderful tribute to some of the great classic soul artists. The acoustic arrangements of these hits are fantastic, performed as only H&O could, and with 17 tracks, each as good as the previous, it is one of the best CDs of true soul classics available. As an example, the first single, "I'll Be Around" has been on the A/C charts for nearly 40 weeks. I’m expecting that my favorite track, “Used To Be My Girl” will be close behind. I listen to this CD nightly on my hour drive home from work, and (except for the traffic) it’s like going back in time. Relaxing…Enjoyable…Incredible!!! The number one duo has put together one excellent CD for those of you who are classic soul fans. Pick up this CD today. You will not be disappointed…

WHAT AN AMAZING CD!!! It has been in my CD player every day since it arrived to my house. This CD is the reworking of marvelous soul classics into a wonderfully new and fresh sound that is marked by the distinctive harmonies of Hall & Oates and their musical engineers. The three new H&O original songs that touch the strings of the heart...You can hear emotion and feeling in each note. I encourage you to listen to see if the soulful sounding violins in this CD inspire your own heart strings.

Our Kind Of Soul is one of the best CDs of true soul classics available. Some of the best classic soul tunes are on this CD, and performed as only H&O could. Among my favorites is their version of Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love". Daryl's voice makes it clean, crisp, and makes you want to listen over and over. Another fantastic track is their rendition of "Ooh Child", which sounds even better the original. My personal favorite is "Used to be My Girl". Daryl makes you feel the sentimental loss of the vocalist. Absolutely unbelievable! "Soul Violins" and "Don't Turn Your Back on Me" both remind me of the great classic H&O tunes. Perfect blend of harmony that no one can come close to. Overall, if you need a fantastic album to add to "your kind of soul" collection, be sure to pick up "Our Kind of Soul". You won't be sorry..........
