Overview

THE TOP TEN INTERNATIONALLY BESTSELLING PSYCHOLOGICAL SUSPENSE YOU CAN'T MISS...

“A cracking read...Our Little Secret builds to a deliciously dark conclusion.” —Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in Cabin 10

Our Little Secret is a twisted tale of love, pain, and revenge that will stay with the reader long after they turn the last page.

They say you never forget your first love. What they don’t say though, is that sometimes your first love won’t forget you…

A police interview room is the last place Angela expected to find herself today. It’s been hours, and they keep asking her the same inane questions over and over. “How do you know the victim?” “What’s your relationship with Mr. Parker?” Her ex’s wife has gone missing, and anyone who was close to the couple is a suspect. Angela is tired of the bottomless questions and tired of the cold room that stays the same while a rotating litany of interrogators changes shifts around her. But when criminologist Novak takes over, she can tell he’s not like the others. He’s ready to listen, and she knows he’ll understand. When she tells him that her story begins a decade before, long before Saskia was in the picture, he gives her the floor.

A twenty-something young professional, Angela claims to have no involvement. How could she? It’s been years since she and H.P., Mr. Parker that is, were together. As her story unfolds, it deepens and darkens. There’s a lot to unpack… betrayal, jealousy, and a group of people who all have motives for retribution. If Angela is telling the truth, then who’s lying?

HA! "A deliciously dark conclusion" indeed! OUR LITTLE SECRET is a story of a close friendship that grows into a love....with a dark kicker. There's a missing person, some STRANGE personal and family relationships that surface AND a BIG mystery to solve leaving the reader to question who and what to believe....or it did me! The whole novel takes place within a 24 hour time span while the beautiful and quiet spoken Angela gives testimony in a police interrogation room spilling the whole truth (or so we think) of her relationship with the hunky HP. As the story evolved, I became more and more engaged finding OUR LITTLE SECRET not so little and a super fast read, but must admit to having an issue with some insane living arrangements encased herein....as you will see. But, overall (for me) a worthwhile read that sure delivers in the end....he.he.he. 3.5 Stars with a round up to 4.0.

Dive into this interesting look into the core of a person and the secrets they guard. No matter how much we might like to let our pasts remain there can we ever really do just that? My heart raced as I worked my way through to the end, why, because I had to know! You never truly know a person do you? Wildly creative, this exhilarating read weaves its way into your psyche and has you looking at your own secrets. You won't be able to put it down, I can't wait to see what this author brings us next, loved it!!!

Thank you to the publisher for sending me a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. I binged through this book in a single day. Wisconsin was in the throes of a mid-April blizzard (yeah, you heard that right), so I decided the only logical possibility for the day was to start a new book. As you do, right? Right. So, I picked up the book with the bright orange cover and decided to give it a whirl. . . And whirled all the way through to the back cover. I basically did no adulting that day except for getting all the candles ready in case we lost power (it was a very strong possibility and I can’t read in the dark). So here’s what I can say about the book (and I’m being very careful here because I don’t want to give away the twist): What. The. Hell! I had no idea what was going on, and it was AWESOME! As with any twisted psychological thriller, you need to reflect on the story after you finish and really think about what happened. Because it’s all kinds of crazy. Our Little Secret was no different. I keep thinking back and wondering if I caught everything. I could apologize for how vague I’m being about this book, but I’m not going to. If I’m too specific regarding my reaction, I’m going to give the twist away. I refuse to do that. I want you to go into this book with nothing more than the synopsis in your mind and see where it takes you. This reading experience was a trip, and I loved it. It’s been one of my favorite psychological thrillers of 2018 so far and I can’t wait for everyone to start reading it!

This story opens in an interrogation room, with Angela prepared to tell her story to police, if they will only listen. Finally, Detective Novak allows her to share everything that she feels is relevant, beginning with her meeting H.P. in high school, where he changed her life. They became best friends who fell in love, or as Angela tells the story, soul mates. She leads Detective Novak through their complicated relationship, hampered by her lack of a healthy role model and his small town contentment, and further strained by Angela attending Oxford, where she’s befriended by Freddy, who dotes on her against her will. Detective Novak perks up at the entrance of Saskia, the missing wife, the reason for Angela’s interrogation, during H.P.’s visit to England. Misunderstandings ensue, emotions tangle, and new pathways are formed. Angela blames losing her first love on everyone else, spending her life from that point on waiting for him to do the right thing. When her mother moves in uninvited after leaving her father, she pursues an unhealthy friendship with H.P. as their houseguest and babysitter, which culminates in Saskia’s disappearance. Detective Novak pieces together the evidence through the long night of storytelling by Angela, who is either also an innocent victim or a truly unreliable narrator. Nay leads the reader through a maze of Angela’s fears, internal struggles, unrealistic desires, and inevitable disappointments. Angela is brilliantly depicted as a minor character in her own life, for which she can then lay guilt at whoever she allowed to make the decisions for her, as she waits in vain for things to go her way without taking action herself. Failure to communicate is a key element in the derailment of Angela’s life, and Nay relays every misstep taken by those underestimating her. The ending is not as well captured as the entire novel leading up to it, subtlety left behind in the previous chapter. I was fortunate to receive an early copy from the publisher through a giveaway.

This is one of the BEST psychological thrillers that I have ever read! It has teens with the regular teenage hang ups who grow up and continue with these hang ups. Angela Petitjean is a teen with a real love interest—HP. And the good news is that HP shares her infatuation. Then, Angela goes to England for eight months of study abroad and everything changes. She meets new people and so does HP. Saskia, a waif from Australia, inserts herself into their lives. Thus the stage is set for a thriller that is non-stop, want to keep reading to the end kind of book. Saskia disappears, but where is she? Who knows anything about her disappearance? HP? Angela? The story is told from the viewpoint of Angela and she leads the reader into the woods and slowly brings you back to the revelation of the truth. This is an extremely well-written novel, with so many twists that you won’t believe it. The premise seems simple, but it isn’t. The solution seems to be a given, but it isn’t. Five stars and waiting for another book by this incredible author! #ShareOurSecret @stmartinspress Disclaimer Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. Mesmerizing, dark, and brilliantly clever! This is a character-driven psychological thriller that illustrates just how fine the line between love and obsession can truly be and reminds us that every choice, good or bad, has a consequence. The writing is crisp, polished and fluid. The characterization is spot on with a multitude of characters that are multi-faceted, insecure and vulnerable. And the plot is an intricately interwoven tale that unravels piece-by-piece creating tension, unease, and suspicion as it subtly reveals all the personalities, relationships, motivations and actions within it. This is, ultimately, a story about deception, danger, competition, desperation, dependence, loneliness, manipulation and the fragility of young love and it's hard to believe this is Nay's debut novel. It's sophisticated, highly entertaining, and a must-read that I guarantee you won't be able to put down.
