Out of Grief is a compelling novel about the complexities and pain of unrequited love and wanting something just out of your reach. As always, EA Kafkalas, writes with such tenderness and compassion for her characters. My heart literally ached for Nikki as she navigated her way through the turbulence of single life, the dating scene, and her relationship with her best friend, Quinn. I will say this, although it deals very deftly with the issues of family relationships, I would not read this one to the children. It has some very sensual love scenes that would make Alice Walker proud. Skillfully written and tastefully done, this is a great read.

It was a wonderful love story, a virtue of patience and being true to yourself. There are some unexpected twists and turns, but I couldn't seem to put it down. Both main characters (Nikki and Quinn) were like-able people. I actually cried at one point, well maybe two or three (no spoilers). I loved Nikki's parents. I saw my Yiayia and Papou in them. (They were Greek, but very similar). The scene with the birds nest cake - was all about expressing love thru food (which any Mediterranean can relate to), plus their strength of character and unwavering love for their children, clinched it for me. Nikki's best friend Kat was a hoot too. I actually tend to like EA's secondary characters, as they seem to have a depth of their own.

Out of Grief - with a title like this I didn't know what to expect. Unrequited love...the toughest love of all. Writing a character who wears her heart on her sleeve can't be easy, especially with such delicacy. Out of Grief proves that Kafkalas has got what it takes! Popular topics in the novel include socially conscious issues like suicide, death, and betrayal while however never losing sight of the importance of unconditional love in a family. This is a true romance novel. Love and romance between two people and then a different two people. You'll have to read it for yourself to find out what I mean! The secondary characters in Out of Grief are so fascinating I wish they could have their own book. The debut of Kafkalas' fourth novel was eagerly anticipated by those of us who have been following her career. And I hear she is already working on a fifth! Note: I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

This story was absolutely filled to the brim with emotions. Nikki and Quinn are clearly the best of friends, understanding one another in a way that is rarely reached. The story starts in a heart-breaking manner that pulls you in wanting to find out how life (for both main characters) will work out, how will things get better? How will they end? Will Nikki be able to overcome her own wants? Will she even need to? How will Quinn handle her pregnancy? These are just a few of the many questions you will thirst to have the answers to. Each and every question will be answered sufficiently and quickly as you fly through the story wanting to find those answers. Throughout the story there were moments where I shed tears, laughed out loud, felt angry at injustices, and had my heart warmed. The depth of the story, the dynamic characters, the twists had me reading quickly and wanting even more when I made it to the final page! I loved the characters and felt fortunate to be welcomed into their lives for a brief period of time. If you're looking for a book that offers more than a typical romance, this is the pick for you!
