The world has almost come to an end. Vast areas have been rendered desolate by bombs and disasters. What remains is ruled by evil overlords that force the people to undergo cruel experiments in the endless effort to rule over all. But hope is not lost. Far beneath the polar ice caps a second ark lies, housing people and animals untouched by the blight that has swept across the surface. The time has come for the Birthrighters, as they call themselves, to venture out into the world. Setting up outposts where they can, they fight against the overlords and rescue what they can of the remaining animals and plants that have retained their original form. I was a little leary when I realized this was a Christian book, many of them get too preachy for my taste. However, Outriders' mix was just right. There was plenty of lessons to learn as the people fought against the overlord Alrod and his mutants, most of which were created against their will from the peasants under his rule. The Outriders must learn to fight when it is needed while learning to accept that it is not always the only way. The overlord isn't their only concern. As the first group to leave the arc enters their 20's, they begin to fight temptation and jealousy. There is much to overcome if the Birthrighters want to succeed in their mission of returning the earth to its original glory. 3.5/5

The Endless Wars have destroyed much of the earth, and all of the technology that man once enjoyed. Only genetic altering potions remain, and these have fallen into the hands of sorcerers that use them without conscience. The villagers, men, women, and children alike, are torn from their homes and taken to laboratories where they are mogged (altered) into horrific beings and forced to serve the evil lords that rule the land. Some are mogged into gargants, giants to be used in warfare, grotesque in their unnatural size. Others are given beauty-enhancing treatments and sent to the harems of noble men and women to be used for pleasure. Many are blended with animal genetic patterns to give them a feature or attribute that will be of use to the kingdom. The sorcerers also experiment with plants and animals, warping creation into frightening forms and beings. A remnant of originals (persons who have not been genetically altered) survived the Endless Wars by gathering what little knowledge and technology remained on the earth and fleeing to the North. Using their combined skills, they built an Ark and sunk it beneath the icecaps. There they flourished for generations until a prophecy came to them telling them it was time to gather specimens of original creation before the evil lords and their sorcerers mogged God¿s creation out of existence. Four young people were chosen, three men and one woman, to leave in the first group. They were sent out of the Ark to establish a camp on earth. Their mission . . . to gather original specimens of plants and animals, to assist other groups in coming to the surface, and to spread the gospel of a kind and loving God who cherishes all of creation and offers hope in the next life. They adapt to life on the brutal surface, where every day holds dangerous challenges. As Niki, the female in the group, rides North to retrieve a new group of rookies, Brady and the other members of the camp battle Lord Alrod and his army of gargants as they attempt to invade a neighboring kingdom. Brady becomes a target for Lord Alrod¿s wrath, putting himself and the camp inhabitants in danger. And when the rooks are harder to manage than Niki planned, she winds up in a battle she cannot win until she looks inside and faces the truth about herself.

Due to the Endless Wars the darkest of dark ages has descended on the planet truth, knowledge, and God¿s Word have become victims of the atrocities. Baron Alrod rules the Traxx with a malevolence that has not walked the earth in centuries his objective is to destroy all who feebly oppose him. The only viable opposition with hope comes from beneath the ice where the Ark, founded when an angel gave Josiah the lost ancient words of God, resides. --- Now the next generation of late teens to early twenties from within the Ark of true believers has begun training. These Birthrighters plan to regain the Promised Land, segments of the surface. Founded by Brady they begin the battle against evil. Niki works with whales to deliver the rooks to their camp while her cohorts led by Brady skirmish with Alrod¿s gargants, his latest use of the old technology by his ¿sorcerers¿ who modified common folk into these monstrous atrocities to spread his domination. --- This is a great young adult post apocalypse thriller that grips readers once the audience (including ancient boomers) comprehends the vernacular thus the plot starts slow, but the adjustment is relatively quick and worth learning the meanings as this enables the pandemic destruction with its two prime groups of survivors to seem genuine. The exciting escapades contain competitors from both camps who seem fully developed. For instance Niki struggles with hiding her feelings of what she assumes is her unrequited love for Brady. Faith in the ancient texts of God tests their mettle as much as the Alrod¿s minions. This is a great genesis tale that will remind fans of the 1980s TV show The Ark, but with an underlying religious message deftly handled as part of the story line. --- Harriet Klausner
