Kate is finally realizing her dream of opening a Bed & Breakfast in the country. Just before opening weekend, while catering for a prestigious party in New York City, she makes a complete fool of herself in front of her best friend's brother, longtime crush, and Hollywood bigwig, Rick Salinger.
Her best friend has arranged for Rick to stay at Kate's during filming of his next movie to help publicize the new B&B. Sparks fly and passions ignite as Kate and Rick are forced to share a roof with one another and his ex-girlfriend. A solid 2 stars. Okay, this book made me so mad! The synopsis was really promising: Girl (Kate) opens bed & breakfast, man of girl's dreams (Rick) comes to stay, and so does his ex. Then a bunch of misunderstandings, lies, and well-meaning friends interfere. As the synopsis says, "What could go wrong?" Oh. So. Much. Let's start with the basic flaw: The man of her dreams, this guy she's been secretly in love with for years, is a jerk. And he treats her like dirt. He suggests they pretend to be lovers to deter his ex from her amorous pursuits, and she agrees. Then, he accuses her of using him and their "fake love connection" (or whatever it is) to get publicity for her B&B. Really? It was his idea!!!! It's like every other chapter he hates her for something stupid he's concocted in his head that she's done. Come on ladies, let's be real. We don't imagine our hero being a giant a**hole, do we? Sure, he's "hot" but are we gonna put up with being treated like we're less than dirt? No way! Second problem: there's this whole sub-plot involving Kate's two best friends that seriously gets like five paragraphs through the whole book. Come on! You brought it up! Expand. We want to know more. Don't just leave us hanging for like 14 chapters and then briefly wrap it up at the end. Not cool. Third problem I had with the book: *SPOILER ALERT* DO NOT READ AHEAD IF YOU WANT TO BE "SURPRISED" BY THE ENDING! * At the end, Rick gets mad at Kate in a very public place for something he thinks she did. But instead of trying to figure it out with him, she just lets it go until his sister (her best friend) calls and tells her she's forgiven. When I read this part I was like, "Excuse me?" If my best friend leaked some intimate information or something, I'd be calling her up ASAP to find out why the crap she did it. So then, when Kate finally does grow a pair and goes to confront him, she tells Rick she loves him, and then like two pages later, he's at her B&B asking for forgiveness and telling her he loves her. NO! NO! NO! She takes him back within seconds, and they live (I assume) happily ever after - or until Rick thinks Kate's done something else manipulative. Seriously. I was so disappointed by the end. It was a pretty quick read, which I liked, but I was so let down by the wishy-washy-ness of Kate, after she'd worked so hard to get everything that she wanted, that I just couldn't get over it. She doesn't once stand up for herself until the very end, but then she invalidates it by telling Rick she loves him. Just thinking about it makes me so mad still. You're a grown ass woman who deserves more than a guy that's going to treat you nice one second and like crap the next. Move on! Find a nice guy to settle down with. I'm literally banging my head on my desk as I type this, it was THAT frustrating for me. And maybe that was what the author wanted me to feel? But it left me feeling very dissatisfied, disappointed, and very glad that I hadn't invested more than a few hours one evening reading it.
