When the Lights Go Out...
Who Will Be Ready?

All Gabe Thompson wanted was a rewarding and challenging career in the U.S. military. He's about to get his wish.

The government knows that a massive solar flare could plunge the entire world into darkness for decades to come, but few believe it will ever happen. The governor of Texas is hoping it won't, but planning that it could. She implements her brainchild, the top secret Operation Nightshade, and Gabe suddenly finds himself chosen to train for the end of modern society.

When the government learns their darkest fear is about to become a reality, Gabe can't warn anyone of the impending disaster—but he can stock his shelves and do everything in his power to ensure his neighbor, Lenora Diaz, will survive as long as possible.

Gabe must race against a cataclysmic solar clock if he hopes to be in position when the blackout descends.

Overshadowed by Vannetta Chapman is the prequel to The Remnant series. Gabe Thompson is at the barber in San Antonio, Texas when he gets the message. Operation Nightshade has begun, and he has one hour to get his belongings and get to the base. He quickly leaves heads home to his apartment. He gathers up his cat, Oliver and knocks on his neighbors. Lenora Diaz has watched Oliver for him before and knows the drill. Gabe wants to warn her, but he knows that he cannot say anything. He can give her a little hint though. Gabe gets to Lackland Air Force Base for the briefing. He has been preparing for this mission for two years. Lenora waits an hour and then checks Gabe’s apartment. When she sees the provisions, Gabe has stockpiled, Lenora knows something big is about to happen. Things are about to change. Overshadowed is not a book that I would normally read. I have never read a dystopian novel. The blurb on this book reminded me of a television show that I enjoyed (and was upset it when it was canceled). So, I thought I would give Overshadowed a try (plus it was free on Amazon). I was pulled right in to this story and when it ended I wanted more. The novel is well-written and intriguing. Vannetta Chapman draws the reader into the story with the plot and characters. I give Overshadowed 5 out of 5 stars. I will definitely be reading the rest of The Remnant series. Be forewarned that the story will make you want to go shopping to stockpile provisions!

Overshadowed by Vannetta Chapman is the Remnant Series prequel and is a must-read! Gabe Thompson is one of the few that really know what is going to happen to the world in a few short hours. His neighbor and friend, Lenora Diaz, figures out what is happening in a discreet, visual way from his apartment that he has left behind. Will the world ever be “normal” like it was before? This fast-paced short story will have you on the edge of your seat. Vannetta does a great job of bringing the characters to life and you will feel like you are right there with them in Hondo, Texas. She relates the characters to circumstances that every one can relate to including fear, confusion, hope and love. Once you start reading this story, you won’t be putting it down anytime soon!

It captured my interest from the very beginning! Both Gabe Thompson and Lenora Diaz are intelligent people who know how to take sudden changes in stride. They are both surprisingly well developed for such a short story. I found myself very deeply connected with both of them as they processed what was happening. I am hooked and finding myself NEEDING to read the first novel in this series as soon as I possibly can.

Overshadowed pulled me in and didn’t let go! Intriguing and insightful, this short story sets the stage for the powerful series that follows. Be sure to have a copy of Book 1, Deep Shadows, on hand, because as soon as you finish this story, you’ll be desperate for more!

Author Vannetta Chapman gives the reader the setting for a possible upcoming world disaster. This short story prepares us for what could happen if the world goes "off the grid". This is a quick read that I couldn't put down. Gabe Thompson knows what to do and he is prepared. He worries about all the people not prepared for this disaster. Great story that will make you want to read more about these characters. I enjoyed this story very much.
