If you're speaking publicly and haven't read this book, you've got more guts than I (and possibly less fans)! Smart, entertaining and chalk full of client anecdotes (both success stories as well as train wrecks), Deborah and David have done all the homework for business professionals to position themselves as savvy and engaging trusted advisors. This book is a MUST HAVE for any business professional who gets out of bed in the morning!

As a professional speaker I'm always interested in tips that can help me connect with my audience, inspire and engage the people around me. This book is full of ideas that work. I've worked with the authors and draw on their advice, suggestions and pointers for every talk I give whether its for 2 people or 200. I am happy that there is a Kindle edition so I can take this book with me as I travel and refer to it to help me prepare. The two chapters that draw me into the book are the first, Intention and the sixth, Stage Fright. Two critical issues for me. I highly recommend this book and know that you will find the material useful, the tone friendly and that your presentations will delight you (and your audience) when you build on what you'll learn here.

I was invited to pitch a new account the other day, and had just finished Own The Room, the new book by Deborah Shames, David Booth, and Peter Desberg. In their chapter on "openings", I learned NOT to start with my name or with thank you's. I decided, instead, to "dive off a cliff" as the book instructed. I jumped right into a narrative story about a similar company we had worked with that had the same problems and needs as the company I was pitching. The story instantly connected with the management team I was presenting to. Breaking the old rules was at first a challenge, but it proved the right path for me. Throughout that pitch, I employed several other strategies outlined in Own The Room, and found them all to work extremely well. I changed my presentation structure, my Powerpoint, my content, and my close. My goal was to get invited to a second meeting. Instead, I was asked for a proposal on the spot! Own The Room is not your usual public speaking or Powerpoint presentation book. It's about communicating for hard dollars. It's about connecting with audiences in a new and powerful way. I particularly like the way the authors weave in real world examples with scientific theory. That one-two punch makes Own The Room much more credible the any business communication I've previously read. If you're in business, you owe it to yourself to try these techniques. Whether it's selling a product, pitching an idea, or defending your case, Own The Room will help you command attention and be heard. If you want to own the room, own this book!

I'm a marketing consultant who often leads meetings, gives presentations, and tries to convince others to follow my recommnedations. I'm always open to learning new ways to be more effective and more comfortable in all sorts of business situations and so I've read my share of business/sales books and have attended many corporate training sessions. What's great about Own The Room is that it's not the typical business book "fluff" that has one idea and fills 300 pages giving examples of that idea. It offers chapter after chapter of smart, practical advice that I started using right away. I also liked that the authors done prescribe a one-size-fits-all list of "must-do's" for speakers. Instead, they tell you how to be more effective using your own individual talents and strengths. That was far more comfortable for me and more useful to me in my day-to-day work. If you want to up your game in terms of effective communications, get this book.
