Overview

Pachelbel's Canon and Other Baroque Favorites

As a collection of musical highlights from the Baroque era (which lasted from about 1600 to 1750, the year of Bach's death), this double-disc collection serves well. Most of the major composers are represented, including Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Bach, and Handel, as well as Purcell, Gabrieli, Allegri, and, of course, Pachelbel. But it is also an excellent anthology of the work of Andrew Parrott and his Taverner Consort, one of the most successful ensembles to emerge from the early music movement. They and others sought to restore historical performing traditions by reviving antiquated instruments and playing styles -- in other words, to make the old sound new again. And if nothing else, this set is a measure of their achievement. Listen, for example, to the lightness and sparkle they give to Vivaldi's Gloria, or how buoyant Pachelbel's familiar Canon sounds in their hands. You'll think you're hearing it for the first time. With equally fresh renditions of such favorites as the "Spring" and "Summer" concertos from Vivaldi's Four Seasons, excerpts from Handel's Messiah, and quite a bit more, what's not to like?
