About the Author

Danielle Kroll is an artist and designer known for her whimsical paintings inspired by travel, nature, and her ever-growing collection of vintage memorabilia. Kroll studied at the Tyler School of Art and majored in Graphic and Interactive Design. In 2009, she started her career in Anthropologie’s art department, and in 2013, she went out on her own, with clients such as Anthropologie, Kate Spade New York, One King’s Lane, Papyrus, Hallmark, Land of Nod, and Figo. Her current work includes commissioned illustrations, personal paintings, ceramics, textiles, and greeting cards. Kroll lives in upstate New York but is drawn to California. She has driven the Pacific Coast Highway many times and backpacked the 220 miles of the John Muir Trail in California. She shares her artwork and adventures with her 40,000 followers on Instagram @daniellekroll.

Artist and designer Kroll has filled this travel guide to the Pacific Coast Highway with delightful watercolor illustrations of the beaches, flora and fauna, and quirky small towns awaiting the traveler. The "ultimate road trip" begins in San Diego and proceeds north to Seattle and Vancouver Island. Kroll's emphasis is on experiencing the natural beauty of the coast. Her recommendations are weighted toward beaches, hiking trails, campgrounds, and forests rather than typical tourist attractions. The book is divided into four sections: Southern and Northern California, Oregon, and Washington, and includes driving times between towns and what to expect in terms of road conditions. Kroll sprinkles historical tidbits throughout and includes helpful tips such as packing lists for car, campground, and self; a road trip playlist; the best times of year to visit based on weather and what's in bloom; tide pool etiquette; and a road trip scavenger hunt. She occasionally mentions restaurants and hotels but does not provide exhaustive lists; rather, the book is a relaxing read even for armchair travelers.
