Pagan Fire is a historical romance set in Ireland in the time when the worship of pagan gods was giving way to Christianity. Maere cu Llwyr is an orphan who grew up in a Christian convent, but she was born under the triple signs of the goddess. Now eighteen, she must come to grips not only with her growing magical powers, but also with Dylan mac Connall, a handsome young man whose parents were also murdered. Unlike Maere, he was raised by a woman who knew magic. Dylan is seductive and he knows more about Maere's past than she knows herself. Maere's Uncle Eugis wants Maere for himself. He knows the extent of her powers and plans to be the first to bed her because legends say the first to do so will share in her powers. Unknown to Maere, he had her parents and Dylan's parents killed and put her in the convent as a part of his mad plan to gain her magic. Dylan knows this and wants revenge on Eugis. Maere is caught between the two men and doesn't know who to believe. I'm not the sort who reads historical books, let alone historical romances. But Barnett's writing is seductive, her research is excellent, and she transports the reader back to a time when belief in magic was prevelent. A terrific read!
Teri Barnett is a heckuva storyteller. Her characters jump off the page and the action is non-stop. Five stars for this one!
