Pain Cagesby Paul Kane
...the blindfold slips a fraction.
I can see a little through my right eye; there isn't a lot of light, but I see metal bars in front of me, all around me. A glimpse of the cages on either side: a man, no more than forty, cowering in the corner of his. A woman--the one who'd told me I'd get myself killed--is transfixed by something right in front

A glimpse of the cages on either side: a man, no more than forty, cowering in the corner of his. A woman--the one who'd told me I'd get myself killed--is transfixed by something right in front of her, tears tracking down her cheeks.
I follow her gaze and wish I hadn't...

I bought this book because Clive Barker said Paul Kane is a good writer. While the stories were different than I thought they would be, they were well-written and kept my interest. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was fantastic. Paul Kane writes with a soft touch, which is missing for so many horror authors. Worth picking up for sure! You won't be disapointed.
There are four stories inside Paul Kane's Pain Cages, and each one of them is a gem. Very well-written, very creative. Great book.
The stories in this anthology are okay, but they do not come across as horrific. I wish I could say more without completely spoiling the stories in the anthology, but not once was I scared or delighted by what I read. The stories are solid and interested, but I feel just not enough ooomph. It struck me as something you might find on someone's coffee table -- the cover looks nice, but no one has read it.
Pain Cages is a very good book. It's well-written and well thought out with lots of different layers hiding within the words. Kane has a way of mixing horror with psychology that keeps the reader hooked.
I loved this book. Paul Kane has a way of making the reader care about the characters while keeping the plot moving forward. Sometimes it's scary, sometimes its sad. An excellent read.
