Painting Juliana is a fresh and edgy novel like nothing else you’ve ever read. Martha Louise Hunter has written a deep story about a woman’s journey that is at once profound, shocking and funny. When Juliana’s comfortable existence is stripped away, she’s forced to move back to her childhood home with her Alzheimer’s-stricken father, and things get interesting. A mysterious shipment of his secret oil paintings arrives, and when Juliana puts a brush in his hand, the paintings reveal an entirely different picture of the parents she thought she knew. Combine that with Juliana’s tumultuous personal life, and what follows is a wild ride of twists, turns and revelations involving a little girl’s terrifying dream, a nude portrait and a mysterious tattoo. And, in case it sounds dull, the tornado cloud on the book jacket wasn’t put there by accident.

Check out the full review at Kritters Ramblings A family drama with a lot of drama!  Juliana is a mother of twins and while in couples therapy her husband drops a bomb on her that sends her whole life in a tail spin.  At the same time her father's Alzheimer's is taking a turn for the worse and she decides to move back into her childhood home to take care of him. Juliana was an interesting main character and at times I was her biggest cheerleader and then at other times I wanted to shake her silly!  She had some definite ups and downs and some decisions that I wish I could have changed, but I still wanted to read on to see where she would end up.  Her husband on the other hand was just despicable and I just couldn't find any redeeming quality about him and really had a hard with Juliana's want to get back together with him.

I loved this book! By the time I had read the first 20 pages, I was hooked and could not put it down. An amazing and compelling story with so many twists and turns, I couldn't wait to turn the page. For anyone who has experienced mental health issues, loss of love, betrayal of friends and had to find their way back--this book will read very familiar and very reaffirming. Truly wonderful read! D. I loved this book!  I think the thing about the book that is unique is that it's many things at once -- a mystery, and it's the aching portrayal of what all mothers go through -- doing anything to keep her family together. The story will strike an emotional chord in every little girl who's ever loved her daddy. Part mystery, part family drama, part shocker,  you want to jump through the pages and hang out with Juliana.  Juliana describes her father's vibrant oil paintings in such a way that you can see them.  The crazy climax really took me by surprise. In the words of Juliana, "'s not what I expected at all."  Martha Louise Hunter won the Texas Writers' League 2011 Manuscript Contest in the Mainstream Fiction category for "Painting Juliana".

Just finished - couldn't put it down. Am in the vortex of all of the shining images. FILM SCRIPT! AM SO STUNNED by Martha Louise Hunter’s storytelling gift. MORE MORE MORE!!! SEQUEL!!!!! I want MORE OF MISS JULIANA - What happens next??? I am so connected with her. She faced the storm. Loved the paintings and what they revealed. Loved the messiness of life and the redemptive power of forgiveness. Love the resilience of the children. Love the way I CARE about the characters - even messed up Oliver. Maybe he will find redemption in another book??? Love the way Juliana nails it in that final chapter. BEAUTIFUL come uppance with grace. How about that motorcycle?? What a great vehicle to take her back into her dream while moving her in her present. The drunk scene was frighteningly real. All of those shards. I highly recommend this engaging read.

Heartwarming, humorous, engaging, and just a thoroughly enjoyable read.   Anyone who has a parent (!) will appreciate Juliana’s discovery about the people her parents were before they were her parents.   Juliana’s tale is also filled with the drama of life today, raising children, how well you really know your spouse, and grappling with changing friendships.  I loved Painting Juliana!
