In a sea of contrived electro-recordings, Paradise is a beacon of organic musical integrity. Eric Tingstad's acoustic guitars aren't wired to sound like killer whales or trumpets; Nancy Rumbel's woodwinds (oboe, English horn, and wooden double flutes called ocarinas) have the same unfiltered honesty that breathes through the works of Bach. The time-honored elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and counterpoint do indeed bring the listener full circle to rest in...paradise. These two performers have been a duo for decades, and their elegantly simple compositions seem like they've existed forever. Their ensemble playing is impeccable, and they always listen to each other with care. The inspiration for these pieces comes from nature, travel, their favorite literature, and even a video game. "Sailing" offers a slick glide over the waters of the Puget Sound, while "Rokeby" conjures scenes of kicking back by the campfire and tracing the lazy paths of the fireflies. Other pieces -- "The Wanderer," "Village Square," and "The Man from Stratford" -- are the essence of jauntiness. "As You Wish" and "Eleganza" swirl with Spanish-flavored romance. Rumbel's ocarina stars in "Zelda's Dance," based on the children's video game Zelda -- The Ocarina of Time. Tingstad humorously honors the buzzing sound of his power mower on "The Lawnmower Song" with some fine, whirling fingerpicking. There's a lovely time to be had by all in Paradise.
