I stumbled upon this book just before my first visit to Paris and picked it up as an afterthought. It proved to be indispensible. I have used it every day of every one of four visits to Paris. It's essentially a detailed street map, with most significant sites identified, a street index, and synopses of major sites, in a thin roughly 5" by 7" booklet. I always keep a copy for reference, always take a copy with me, and have given several copies to friends preparing to visit. It's the best spent ten bucks possible if visiting Paris. More detailed than most tourist type maps, less cumbersome than a street map, it shows each and every street. And it has a street index so you can always find where you are. Lost? Walk to the nearest corner, look up the street in the index, turn to the page and, voila!, you know where you are. Pair this with a good travel guide (Lonely Planet, Let's Go, Frommers, Rick Steves, etc.) and you really have all you need to plan and enjoy a successful trip. Incredibly, some people don't bother to take a street map to a city such as Paris. All it takes is something like taking the wrong Metro train or the right one in the wrong direction and you can become hopelessly lost in a strance city in minutes. All it takes to get immediately un-lost is this book.

The Paris Mapguide is a highly useful, user friendly resource for getting around the city. The easy to read maps combine information for bus, metro, over-ground rail, and river transport with key points of interest. I purchased a copy for my family's first trip to Paris - it worked great. I would suggest it's a must-have for both first time and longer term Paris travelers. Combined with your favorite guidebook you may never make another wrong turn. I also recommend the London Mapguide.

This is truly an "essential guide" to Paris. I hope that there are plans to revise it yet again. Last revision included pictures of significant monuments but also found some street name errors (only detectable to those who really know Parisian streets), easy navigation, very useful. I do not find the more popular maps of Paris to be all that useful for one who really likes to learn the ins/out of Paris. Highly recommend!
