Overview

Passage Meditation: Bringing the Deep Wisdom of the Heart into Daily Life by Eknath Easwaran

Written by a highly respected teacher who taught meditation for over forty years, this book gives you all you need to start meditating. With quiet humor, realism, and warmth, Easwaran gives clear instructions and points out the pitfalls. He explains the theory underlying meditation, and conveys the deep joy, security, and selfless energy that regular practice can bring.

In Easwaran’s universal method of passage meditation, you choose a spiritual text, or passage, from the world’s great traditions that embodies your highest ideals. You memorize it, and then send it deep into consciousness through slow, sustained attention. This method of meditation stays fresh because you can vary the passages according to your own needs. With regular practice, the passages become lifelines, taking you to the source of wisdom deep within and then guiding you through the challenges of daily life.

Meditation is supported by seven other points in Easwaran’s spiritual program, helping you to stay calm, kind, and focused throughout the day.

I first read this book in search of a method of meditation I could actually practice on a daily basis. I was struck by the clarity and common-sense approach of Eknath Easwaran. Each time I re-read the book, I'm amazed at the depth that is hidden in what seem like very simple, obvious guidelines to meditation and related spiritual practices. This book is not a comparison of different forms of meditation or an in-depth discussion about sitting in meditation. However, if you are hoping to read a book that you can put into practical use, you will soon find what seems basic on the surface leads to an amazingly effective method of meditation and a very rich set of spiritual tools that you can actually use in your daily life. Meditation (in any style) is a practice that involves training your mind and directing your attention. Anyone who meditates daily will find it artificial to try to separate the period of time in which you meditate in the morning from the rest of what you think, say, and do during the day. The practices described in this book actually address this connection in a wholistic, down-to-earth way. Another attraction this book has for me is that the method described in this book honors all religions and does not require the reader to change his or her religious affiliation to be able to meditate.

This book, like many other books from Eknath Easwaran, has tremendously changed my life for the better. I would recommend this book to anyone who asks those kinds of questions, what is the purpose of life? Why am I here? I would also strongly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for practical, hands on solutions to everyday problems and stress. It has everything you could hope for in a book written to better your life.

Reading Sri Easwaran's books is always a pleasure. In this book, as in others of his that I've read, he expresses such a wonderful gentle humour and is very practical in his approach to establishment of the practice of meditation, reassuring you in every page that it's hard indeed but very worthwhile.

If you're looking for a book to introduce you to passage meditation this one will be helpful. If you are already into it, perhaps another text will do a better job. Direct, simple language and good examples to define and describe what passage meditation is about are found throughput the book. The analysis of mantras from different cultures is superficial and it only mentions a few. At the end I was left with a fairly good idea on meditation in general and passage meditation in particular and a scoop on possible mantras to use. You will need other texts to advance in this field.
