Past Crimes: A Van Shaw Novel by Glen Erik Hamilton

The Anthony, Macavity, and Strand Critics award-winning debut from Glen Erik Hamilton

When his estranged grandfather is shot and left for dead, an Army Ranger must plunge into the criminal underworld of his youth to find a murderer and uncover a shocking family secret in this atmospheric and evocative debut thriller.

Van Shaw was raised to be a thief, but at eighteen he suddenly broke all ties to that life and joined the military—abandoning his illicit past and the career-criminal grandfather who taught him the trade. Now, after ten years of silence, his grandfather has asked him to come home to Seattle. But when Van arrives, he discovers his grandfather bleeding out on the floor from a gunshot to the head. With a lifetime of tough history between him and the old man, Van knows he’s sure to be the main suspect.

The only way he can clear his name is to go back to the world he’d sworn to leave behind. Tapping into his criminal skills, he begins to hunt the shooter and uncover what drove his grandfather to reach out after so long. But in a violent, high-stakes world where right and wrong aren’t defined by the law, Van finds that the past is all too present . . . and that the secrets held by those closest to him are the deadliest of all.

Edgy and suspenseful, rich with emotional resonance, gritty action, and a deep-rooted sense of place, Past Crimes trumpets the arrival of a powerful talent in the mold of Dennis Lehane, Robert B. Parker, and John D. MacDonald.

At the age of 9 years old, Van was placed in the care of his grandfather, Dono, who was a skilled thief. Until the age of 18 years of age, Dono trained Van well in the art of being a good thief. Dono and Van parted ways and didn't speak to each other for 10 years. Van received a strange note from his grandfather asking him to come home. When Van arrived, he saw Dono had been shot in the head. Van needs to find out why he was summoned home, who shot his grandfather and why other friends are being killed. Z

I'm a huge fan of murder mysteries. They're my most favorite type of novel. I'm also a huge fan of any storyline that has to do with thieves and things along those lines. So I can't tell you how excited to read "Past Crimes" I was when I received it in the mail. This was a major page turner for me. I had a hard time putting it down because I wanted to know what Van Shaw (the main character) would find next, and I was majorly interested in finding out just who shot his grandfather. I mean, a man with his history must have a long list of enemies, right? But when I found out who the shooter was? I gasped so loud that the other person in the room with me thought something was wrong. That's how surprised I was. I get so excited when I find a book that does that to me! Mr. Hamilton did an excellent job with this novel. I was so involved with the story from paragraph to paragraph. I have to admit that I don't take mysteries very lightly, considering that they're my favorite, so when I find one I love, I just HAVE to tell everyone about it (which I've already done, my grandmother is currently reading my copy). One of my most favorite things about the way Glen Erik Hamilton did "Past Crimes" that I have to point out is the flashbacks to Van's childhood. It gives a great background on our protagonist and an interesting view of his grandfather Donno. I must say that I cannot WAIT until I get my hands on the sequel "Hard Cold Winter". I am twice as excited.

A Promising Start to a new Series. I got this book as a present and I thoroughly enjoyed it, not only because it takes place in my home state of Washington, and its always fun to read about places you are familiar with, but also because the storyline grabbed me right from the first page and held my attention until the end. I especially liked all the complex and interesting characters, and the book was peppered with plenty of mystery, action and even a little bit of romance. I can't wait to see what will happen next, and I hope that there will be many more books in the series. Nicely written and very entertaining.
