Pavane presents a truly remarkable alternate 20th century, the result of the ripple effects of the assassination of Queen Elizabeth I: steam engines that run on roads, signal corps not unlike those found in Terry Pratchett's Going Postal…in fact, Pratchett, Gaiman, and many sf and fantasy authors from the 1960s on have clearly been influenced by Roberts' terrific book. Recommended most highly.
This book takes one of the great 'What ifs' of history and makes it kind of dull. I would like to have read more dialogue between the characters. It did give a good sense of what life would be like in a industrial society. Some of the movers and shakers from that time would have helped the story.
