Overview

Peakin' at the Beacon

Just about every year the Allman Brothers Band descend upon New York and settle in for a spate of shows at the intimate Beacon Theater, a venue that seems to bring out the best in the hardest-working band in Southern rock (the adoring Yankees there to greet 'em don't hurt either). This concise disc, culled from their 2000 Gotham stand, may not be as expansive as some of the ABB's live outings, but it packs plenty of punch, as well as a goodly number of those in-the-zone moments that occur when the band are at their improvisational peak. The latter mood comes to the fore on a roller-coaster run through "Seven Turns" and a rendition of "High Falls" that spotlights the remarkable playing of guitar prodigy Derek Trucks. On the flip side, fans of the Allmans' down-and-dirty side will also want to dig into this peach -- particularly the opening salvo of "Don't Want You No More" and "Ain't My Cross to Bear." As always, the fan-friendly band did their best not to retrace their steps, thus displacing some of their better known material in favor of more obscure, but still crowd-pleasing, nuggets such as "Black Hearted Woman" and "Stand Back." The Allmans at the Beacon will no doubt continue to be one of New York's hottest tickets for years to come, but if you can't make it to the Big Apple, consider this the next best thing to being there.
