Children's Literature - Lisa Colozza Cocca
This title, part of the "Animal Life Cycle" series, takes young readers through the life cycle of an Emperor penguin. This twenty-four page book is divided into five short chapters plus back matter. Each spread features very brief text and appealing full-color photographs. The book begins by explaining what a life cycle is, and then takes readers step by step through the penguin's cycle: breeding, egg, chick, and adulthood. A simple timeline of the cycle runs across the bottom of the pages. Back matter includes an illustrated glossary and a sequencing activity for readers. There is also a teacher and parent guide page, a short list of web sites for further information, and a simple index. Chockfull of information, this entry delivers the facts in bite-sized portions that will appeal to early readers. The book will likely be a favorite among young report writers and animal lovers. The book supports the Common Core State Standards in reading informational texts. Reviewer: Lisa Colozza Cocca
