PERFIDITAS by Alison Morton

Present day, alternative timeline. Captain Carina Mitela of the Praetorian Guard Special Forces is in trouble – one colleague has tried to kill her and another has set a trap to incriminate her in a conspiracy to topple the government of Roma Nova. Founded sixteen hundred years ago by Roman dissidents and ruled by women, Roma Nova barely survived a devastating coup d'état thirty years ago. Carina swears to prevent a repeat and not merely for love of country.

Seeking help from a not quite legal old friend could wreck her marriage to the enigmatic Conrad. Once proscribed and operating illegally, she risks being terminated by both security services and conspirators. As she struggles to overcome the desperate odds and save her beloved Roma Nova and her own life, she faces the ultimate betrayal...

*** Copy gifted by the author in exchange for an honest review Perfiditas is the second booking in the Roma Nova series. Personally, I like the concept of a modern day Roman Empire and I think the author does a good job exploring what that could look like. I also appreciate having a female protagonist and strong female characters. There is plenty of action and intrigue in this book as well. Sometimes I found the writing to be a bit confusing. I think it was the mix of Latin words and UK phrases. Solid book overall and I look forward to reading the next installment.

Perfiditas by Alison Morton was an adventure! I think that his author really has done her research. She greats a “Roma Nova”. Captain Carina Mitela was a fantastic lead character! I found her to be interesting, strong and very capable! She was a great example of a strong roman women. This alternative roman is led by women! I also loved that idea of an alternative history! I feel completely inadequate in Roman history but I really enjoyed the concept! I loved the combination of history, adventure and mystery! Carina is accused of conspiring against the Praetorian Guard Special Forces. She has to work hard to prove her innocence. The witty dialogues were a great bonus. Inceptio was the previous book in this series, and although I did not read it, it did not affect my ability to follow and enjoy this story. I was completely impressed with the author’s ability to present a historical roman in the “now”. Clever storyline, fantastic author, original plot!

I received a copy of PERFIDITAS as a gift from the author in exchange for an honest review. While the book was not exactly what I was expecting, I still really enjoyed it. I am sure that had I read the first book, I would have not been a bit confused in the beginning. I am definitely going to have to read book 1 as I am sure I will enjoy it as well and it will help to get me back on track. I would recommend this book only after you read book 1 and if you enjoyed book 1.
