Reviewed by Alyssa Elmore for Readers' Favorite Suppose you were a werewolf that was afraid of the dark. Or a spider that is afraid of bugs? Phantasmagorical Phobias by Michelle Path is a darkly humorous collection of children's short stories that explores fears and phobias. Discover how people and other creatures face their anxieties and learn from them. Follow creatures of the night as they try to avoid their fears, only to find themselves face-to-face with them. How will they respond? Will they stay and fight, or run in the other direction to be consumed by the very thing they dread the most: their fear? Will the witch who is petrified of toads be able to get past her fear? Or will she forever have her cauldron of spells explode in her face? Phantasmagorical Phobias by Michelle Path is an excellent teaching tool for children that struggle with anxiety and phobias. I loved how the author shows the feeling of fear in a humorous, yet serious light. Each of the characters has a grave issue that wreaks havoc in their lives, yet they learn how to address these concerns in a positive and empowering manner. I believe that it will help the young reader to see their own fears for what they are; a challenge that must be confronted. I was intrigued from the beginning; a vampire that is afraid of blood and a dragon that is terrified of fire? Let's not forget the pirate who is scared silly of birds and the cowboy that avoids horses! Each story has engaging characters with a major issue that they resolve by the end of the story. I would recommend this book to young readers that love the darker creatures such as vampires, witches, and ogres.
