Overview

Phantom Moon

Duncan Sheik is in many ways the anti-Nick Drake -- a man-about-town, extroverted pretty boy, whereas the late Mr. Drake was a tragically shy, sullen introvert. But this hasn't stopped Sheik from trying to become more like his musical idol. Sheik has been known to play an entire set of Drake's Pink Moon LP with Irish guitarist Gerry Leonard, and while he does team up with Leonard and New York playwright Steven Sater for the collaborative Phantom Moon, the result sounds more like the '70s soft rock of John Denver or Bread than Drake's melancholy musings. The 13 mellow songs on Phantom Moon are cast in both minimal and orchestral arrangements. The lyrics are sometimes poetic, but at times they don't quite work: "They were young / They were fair / They brushed their bronze and dusky hair," sings Sheik in the standout track, "Sad Stephen's Song"; such lyrics may have been easier to pull off back in the rainbows-and-unicorns decade, but in the new millennium they seem a bit pretentious. Still, fans of Sheik will want to hear his attempt at extreme melancholy -- until his third pop album arrives. All the elements of sad ballads are in place (many of the lyrics are actually taken from Sater's play Umbrage), except for Sheik's naturally un-sad voice.
